This is one of the oldest and widely used spelling text books around, and as I have found, with good reason. It's really well laid out, has clear links with National Literacy Strategy, so you can be sure you're on the right course, and comes with fun reading comprehension passages so you can test your child as you go along, without them really noticing! It's easy to use and makes your child use all their senses when learning to spell.

This consists of a series of related stories about the same characters. It is geared towards children and uses only the present tense. It is very simple so is excellent for anyone just starting French. I wanted something to help revise my French having not used it for many years and wanting only reading skills so I rattled through it at a great rate. There was nothing there to puzzle me. If you want to build up confidence then it is a fine choice but it will be too simple for anyone who has a reasonable grasp of French.

In the preface to the first edition, Catford explained that he had written, not just for students of linguistics, but for actors, language teachers, the deaf, and many others. Anyone interested in learning the basics of phonetics and, above all, in learning how to pronounce the many sounds of the world's languages, will find this the ideal introduction.

I have used these books with my four year old son.
It must be said that they are very useful: not only am I able to test his blending skills, but he absolutely loves them. He is forever asking to read "those lift the flap books".
The level of difficulty seems to be about right, though perhaps one more book without digraphs would have been useful.
I have two criticisms to make, which have prevented me awarding these books 5 stars: they are too short, and the paper is too thin. It is actually possible to see the pictures without lifting the flaps, so I have to be very careful to cover the relevant side of the book when I'm reading with my son.

I started learning French last September on the basis that I would be working for the summer in Paris. I have just come back from Paris and it is thanks to this book that I have managed to be able to learn conversational French pretty much on my own within the space of one year. I looked at lots of other ones and not only were they far more expensive (with some going over £20!), but they were also less concise, harder to comprehend, and often in no real order.
This book manages to fulfill all of these demands and more. It is perfectly feasible to be able to learn a chapter a day, or every other day if you put aside a few hours each day - meaning you can learn over 5000 words in two months or so. No other vocabulary book would be able ... Read More:

I love this as you can ignore the book and just lie back and learn practical French from the cd!
But the book is helpful if you need clarification about words or phrases. The tone is fun, pleasant and not annoying.
