I bought this book for my son who had just started learning French and seemed to be struggling with some aspects of language learning. How I wish I had had this book when I did French at school. Why didn't anyone ever tell me the things contained in this book? There are tricks and lists to help remember and in fact guess things such as whether the word is le or la etc.
Very useful book.

This is a fun and enjoyable cd set that is easy to follow. The example spoken and written phrases are exactly what you want to hear and see when you are new to a language.I liked the fact that is all seems modern and not at all like the old fashioned text that we learned in school.
I downloaded the discs to my Mp3 and made much more prgress than I expected leading up to our visit to France. Highly recommended!

I bought this book whilst living in a French speaking country and working at a European Union institution, for both of which knowledge of French was essential. I was instantly impressed with its quality, and its no nonsense approach to French. Far from more "all round" courses which aim to make learning pleasant, this book presupposes a level of interest and commitment that means there are no pictures or cultural notes. Just the language itself.
The book has a common format. A brief and direct introduction to the verb tense being explored, followed by LOTS of example exercises, where our knowledge of the verb tense just taught is tested to destruction point. All of the major tenses are covered, including rarer tenses that only tend to ... Read More:

A word of warning, this book is not exactly a pocket edition. I've just received my copy today and it is huge. I was expecting a handy pocket dictionary, but instead it is a mighty 8" x 5" and 2" thick.
It may well be a great dictionary, but don't expect to carry it around in your pocket. Hence, 4 Stars for the misleading title.

This book is really useful especially when shopping - if you don't feel confident enough to attempt the pronunciation you can point to the picture to make yourself understood. As has been mentioned it will help to enlarge your vocabulary. This book attracted much interest from friends and family - I thought I might not get it back. Buy it, you won't regret it, as they say, a picture says a thousand words.

This is a superb course for the advanced learner (you really need to be AT LEAST post GCE level, or have spent a reasonable amount of time living in France). This course is targeted primarily at the self-study learner, but I even found it useful as a backup to my undergraduate studies. There is plenty of conversation and listening practice on the cassettes, and the course covers contemporary subjects such as the environment, health, tourism, French national holidays and the French press. I only have one small quibble in that the grammar covered, although advanced, is quite brief and you would perhaps expect a course of this level to be more thorough. However, I suspect the author has kept grammar to a minimum perhaps in an effort to ensure that the ... Read More:

I bought this originally for myself as I am studying French, German and Spanish (for fun would you believe) but it is so easy to learn that my 7 year old has it on her iPod and we are starting to have conversations.
(I also speak to her in German at times and due to how easy these CD's are, she is able to have limited chats in that too.)
There are some tunes in the background which phrases are laid over in time, and you hear them and lock them in your mind along with the tune. The guys voice is almost hypnotic and the woman who speaks with him is clear and easy to understand making it ultra easy to repeat and learn.
She will often make the odd comment about language rules, but the CD doesn't bombard you with nouns, verbs, ... Read More:

Although this book does contain some useful phrases and an easy breakdown of each word, i have to agree with the previous reviewer in that many phrases are outdated. calling a waiter 'boy!' in england would get odd looks, in france you would be asked to leave. This book is probably best used as a basic reference for those who speak some french already and need to brush up on a few things... just dont shout 'garcon' at anyone ;)
