`Boy' is about Roald Dahl's childhood and it is as good as Matilda, BFG and the Twits. It's very imaginative and true an awfully strange pair. You can imagine bits of it like when they got caned for putting a dead mouse in the Sweet Shop lady's sweets, Roald Dahl went to a boarding school for boys as his secondary school and he went to a Catholic primary school. Roald Dahl wrote another book about his past but as a pilot of a fighter plane for the RAF in the Second World War, but that is another story which I have also reviews called `Going Solo'. I have to say this is one of my favourite books of all time. I would rate it 1000000000/10. I think anyone and everyone would enjoy is and some people might have met his before he died in 1990. A ... The author has beefed up his account. As someone who has acted as a courier there are some glaring inconsistancies. Why not include accounts of his supposed many 'runs'to Thailand,India,South America.Warren does not provide details.Did they happen? The line about Avril, what was that about, other than to pad out the pages? The warning signs before the bust ,especially his taxi driver who apparently was his contact also who left a message that he could not drive Warren to the airport. That should have sent alarm bells. Why did he not clear out of the hotel, left heroin in left luggage and gone to another hotel to think it through. Why rope Paul into the scam?Either Warren is the slopiest courier around or he has embelished the story. The only part thats ... If you like adventure then you can't go far wrong with this book. During World War II, petty East End criminal Eddie Chapman finds himself banged up in occupied Jersey's prison. He is given a lifeline that he cannot refuse - come and work for German secret intelligence as a spy or face the consequences. Eddie opts for the former and is thrown into the grandiose world of a German spymaster. Now he is faced with the moral dilemma of double-crossing his country or the gamble of double crossing his new found boss. You'll have to read the book to find out which choice he makes ... I thoroughly recommend this book!

I agree with one of the reviews on the inside cover of the paperback edition which calls Frey selfish, egocentric, violent & pompous. I sensed from the off that something wasn't quite right about the tale Frey was telling. Ultimately he seems more concerned with telling a good story than saying anything that may benefit other recovering addicts. His stubborn rejection of the 12 step programme made him seem like an idiot. As an adult he recalled a childhood 'prank' of him locking his pal in a box. He showed no remorse and said that he still found it funny. The passage of time had not taught him any sense of humility or to care for anyone other than himself. This recollection occured as he was reluctantly working through the early stages of the 12 steps, which ... Read More:

This book I first heard about on Radio 4 when it was serialised and had me laughing and teary eyed. I got it and it didn't disappoint. It was funny, addictive, genuine and a real pleasure to read. It highlights the ups and downs and everything in between about being a doctor in the NHS.

I bought this book without knowing anything about Bill or his following, what her wrote or how he wrote. It was literally a last minute buy before a 2 week holiday. I'd finished before the end of the first week.
I was instantly drawn in by his characteristic writing style, which is playful and informative as ever. I loved learning about his childhood and all the events which surrounded it. I was literally in awe. I'd never read like this before.
So after a week and a half in Cyprus with nothing to read, I was home and went to a bookstore to buy another of his (Notes from a Large Country) which I loved as well.
I've read a few of his now, but still none beat this. And no other writers compare. Read this book!

At the time I only bought Bringing Down The House, that was a mistake, I should have got Breaking Vegas at the same time. I will go back and give the book another read (you can speed-read very quickly thanks to Mezrich's writing) since I watched the faction film "21" at the cinema last month. Anyone wanting the true story, this is the closest you'll get.

Quite simply, if you want to be a writer, this is a must read. Succinct, brilliantly arrogant at times, but he tells it as it is. Recommend without reservation.
