I was extremely disappointed with this twaddle. Perhaps if I was 12 years old I would have enjoyed it. Its not the pornographic nature of the story and senseless violence - I'm definitely no prude, but all the characters were zero dimensional. I didn't care what happened to them. Shame, as I heard a lot of good things about Mark Millar. (I hope) this was an attempt by him to write something mass market - clearly successfully, but at the expense of a story, taste, interesting characters, exciting fight scenes - and an all important decent ending. I found absolutely no re-read potential in this whatsoever. This was probably a short story at best.

I have tried to read this three times now but I just cannot finish it because it is so awful.
The artwork is terrible and the plot has no way of keeping the reader interested at all. Like the previous review states, there is hardly any Batman at all and the ending is so sudden and poor that I was glad that I skipped to the end after part 3.

i decided to read this on th basis tht it shud be quite gd!
hwever this is probably one of the best comic collections ive ever read!
fantastic, great artwork and a great story!!
this story really tied up a lot of loose ends and opened a hell of a lot more too!
this is an essential read for ne, xmen, marvel, comic fan...but this is such an exciting read that it allows even a general reader into the world of the xmen!
the truly gr8 story and def the best since M-Day! in my opinion!

Charley's War is certainly a classic British comic strip and has lots to recommend it. Unfortunately the downside to these lavish reprints comes with Pat Mill's commentaries. While they are interesting when he talks about the production of the strip they veer into unintended comedy when he begins his customary Left wing agit-prop ranting. Charley's War dates from a time early in Mills' carer when he still tried to write stories instead of crude political tracts and introducing the customary mix of paranoia and vanity which marks 70's left overs like him really spoils things.
Kudos to Pat though for consistently putting forward the name of Charley's War artist Joe Colquhoun as a forgotten master. His art IS amazing and accounts for more ... Read More:

Here bendis has taken an over used concept, magnified it and spun it all within his plot that he is building towards. The art comes from Mark Bagley who is a very competent artist, and very distinctive to. So as long as you don't mind the very clear nineties style art it is fine. The Characters are all well written, sadly many of them just aren't that interesting, Wasp and wonderman being clear examples.

I have to agree with RC Searle - whilst the books (more like bound comics) are well drawn and nicely presented, they do not have much substance as they are effectively a comic strip.
My 9 year old read this book in one go, but does dip back to it now and again.
They are possibly geared more towards adult comic book fans of Star Wars based on the price.

This book really is a joy. Every Marvelite who gets one will love it. It contains lots of stuff that old time fans will possibly already know about but this is the first time I have seem so many photos of Marvel and Timely staff members in one book. This book is as much about the company as it is the characters and is all the better for that. I love all the reproduction pencil sketches, stamps and cards etc they are very realistic replicas. As a Brit we never really got chance to see any of those things in real life so to actually hold them in my hand is a bit of a thrill. I feel this book will mostly appeal to older comic fans between the ages of 30 and 50 looking for a bit of nostalgia rather than small boys or young fans of superhero films and cartoons. I ... As someone who has not followed a marvel story arc in a few years. I found this an absolutely essential read to get me up to speed with what was going on in the Marvel Universe in the lead up to Civil War. The Maleev artwork , in the Illuminati one-shot, eased me in, as it was his and Bendis' Daredevil run that was the last arc I followed. This section was the stand out for me, reminding me of the Sidney Lumet movie "Twelve Angry Men", but obviously taken to a "super" degree. It's not the life of one man at stake, but the whole world. The Fantastic Four and Spider-man sections worked well, but not as fluidly for me as the Illuminati. Certain factors felt slightly too forced (see the editing team's bickering), but you see why they crowbarred in certain points when ... Read More:
