The first Sin City book was incredible, I've never read anything like it. So, how come the next book is such a flop? Firstly, all the characters are a bit dull, none of them have the charm that Marv did in the first book. This being set before and during the events of the first book, Marv makes a cameo appearance, but you never get to hear his thoughts during the book, which is what made him such an interesting character.
The plot is as flat as the characters. The first book has you constantly wondering what's going to happen, and could easily be read in one sitting, you just don't get bored enough to put it down. This time, however, you think nothing of putting it on the shelf and returning to it later, when you have the free time. ... Read More:

I finished reading this series a short time ago, and after the initial excitement of the early volumes, I was so disappointed at the rest that I've finally decided to get it off my chest in a review.
The story gets off to a cracking start - I'd never seen a graphic novel like this before. The themes are awesome and cosmic. The violence is... violent and quite funny at times. It's shocking. If your jaw doesn't drop open a few times as you read it, you probably have tetanus. It has a few wonderful, memorable moments that you'll never forget.
But for me the whole thing has two major problems.
First - the pervy sex and cuss words, blasphemy, etc... I have no problem with these as such, but it's as ... Read More:

Reading these reviews of Tintin au Congo reminds me of the words of social analyst Jason Edward Black, "the scariest of racial stereotypes and prejudices arise when the public cannot recognize such ills." Frankly I'm concerned by some of the responses: "there is nothing here that I would personally regard as outrageous" and "It preaches the true story of colonialism and Africa. However there is absolutely nothing racist about it..."
As a child I read both Tintin and Asterix comic books, adored them and was delighted to study them in a course on la bande dessinée at uni. This is when I read Tintin au Congo which provoked pretty strong feelings of repulsion.
This is emphatically not an ideal read for young Tintin fans. It is however a thought provoking ... Read More:

Having revealed some shocking facts about the Sohma dictator, Akito, Natsumi Takaya turns her attention to the supporting players.
And the eighteenth volume of "Fruits Basket" turns us back to several favorites -- Hiro, Kisa, Haru and Rin, with a little sprinkling of Yuki and his budding love life. What's more, Takaya throws a wild little twist in near the end, which hints at what will eventually happen to the zodiac.
Rumors are flying that Machi tried to murder her baby brother, surprising Yuki. As he searches for clues to this quiet, strange girl's personality, he also has to deal with one of his fangirls, who is about to graduate and has a parting message for him. The truth of Maki's family life only draws Yuki closer to her.

I, like many people I would guess, bought this novel after seeing the film. The first thing that struck me is how closely the film-makers stuck to the source material. There are several lines and scenes that have been duplicated to the letter in the film and the visual imagery is just as stunning in both adaptations.
There are some small changes between the book and the film e.g. everyone is totally naked apart from the cloak in the book but differences such as these are easily explained I would think i.e. the film-makers may have had a problem with 300 sets of male genitals being on screen for 90 minutes!
As has already been stated, this is not true to the history of the real event and never once has it claimed to be. Consequently, all you pendants out there who are moaning ... Read More:

This is brilliant collection. Gurewitch is a fantastic artist and obviously skilled in a number of different styles. Some of the strips are simplistic and childlike to the point where a ten-thumbed idiot like me could draw them. Others are as meticulously detailed and vidid as the work of the great Robert Crumb. All are brilliant in their own way. Whatever style Gurewitch adopts, it seems the perfect choice for the material - he obviously has a keen sense for the marriage of content and form.
But what of the content? In short, it's hilarious. The humour is misanthropic, dark and twisted but it is never cheap. With some controversial comic artists, like Dagsson and Max Canning, the controversial nature of their work can seem a bit limited and superficial; often there seems to be ... Read More:
