i bought this book from my uni book shop (popular chain store begining with W and end with "stones") - which cost me five pounds more. i could have saved the extra cost buying it from amazon, but would have had to pay p&p.
the content in short is: you would find this book interesting if you are the type who enjoys reading specifications and protocol documentations. if you dont, then this book doesnt attempt to make it any less painless.
however, i will comment on the cheapo low grade paper that this book is printed on... i mean COME ON! i paid near £50 for 891 page book, that's TWICE the amount i paid for my bruce schneier - cryptography applied; which incidentally is printed on PROPER paper. if the book was packed ... Read More:

This book is an excellent introduction into the world of Visual Basic 2008 .NET language.
He gives you a list of the chapters you need to skip/ skim over and read thoroughly depending on your background (new programmer, coming from a different .NET language or a VB6 programmer).
He does a good job of pointing out the essentials within his book and his examples are easy enough to follow.
I've bought quite a few "Teach Yourself" books in the past and was so bored by chapter 2 that they were shelved. I've finished this now and will be looking for a book with more gritty details.
A great intro book for the novice programmer or a new programmer to the world of .NET programming.

I've been a business/systems analyst for about 12 years, and read about 2-3 books a year to keep upto date. I went on a UML course, and this book was recommended by the course tutor.
I think its one of the best UML books I've ever read (and I've read about 20), and indeed one of the best books on analysis I've ever read. What I really like about it is that there are lots and lots of example models, so you're left in no doubt about what the message is and you get to see lots of ways of modelling scenarios.
I will definitely be reading their next book.

The book successfully manages to demystify the sometimes intimidating world of networking, offering simple and practical advice to plug into your many different worlds - great for career development as well as for creating personal networks. It's an easy read with very helpful tips for all levels of networkers - beginners, intermediates and experts!

I bought this to supplement my final year Geography degree. It was a core text in the GIS course and for good reason. It described processes and also, examples and case studies of how they're applied!
In short - a superb, well written entry level text.

This is a good book for project managers and senior developers who have enough experience to understand that even a practice like agile development needs a framework to work within and a certain number of standard project management controls to be successful.
It deals with some of the practical issues a project manager will face like prioritisation techniques, acceptable levels of functional delivery, inter-dependencies, estimating, padding estimates, monitoring progress, release and iteration planning.
Cohn hasn't written the book specifically around any one methodology (ie SCRUM, XP etc) which is good, as in reality people lift and use ideas from various methodologies. In that respect this book is a good reference guide ... Read More:

First thing's first: this book is basically scripts of the podcasts. It does have a few cooky drawings and a slither of new content but, for the most part, if you've heard the podcasts, then you've heard this book.
"Happyslapped by a Jellyfish" is much, much better (and cheaper!).

The book covers enough detail for this exam (its main purpose). I found the book concise and to the point. I was able to pass using this as my main study tool. If you have passed the 70-270 exam you find this easy reading, as this exam is closer to the MCDST 70-271. i.e.
+ no requiremnts for automated installs
+ AD or group policy etc
Basically it is an easy read if your familiar with the previous XP exams.

I bought Aperture 2 and thought I had got to grips with the basics. I decided to buy this book as a reference for developing my skills. As a reference it is great. However, I have recently been following Richard Harrington's pod casts, one of the authors, and they have moved me on considerably. The book is no longer simply a reference point- it is a road map for discovering the amazing potential of this incredible software.
Own a PC? Buy a Mac, buy Aperture 2, buy this book.
