This is an inspiring read about two young Stanford Institute of Technology students who took on the world - and won. Through a stunning power of belief, they decided one day to download the whole Internet and to use thousands of computers to store the data and so build the quickest and most reliable search engine of its time. Sounds simple, doesn't it?
One of the chapters is called "A Healthy Disregard for the Impossible" and that just about sums up the attitude and philosophy of the google founders.
This book (both descriptive and analytical) should be read by those at corporate level and also those who are thinking of lighting the creative entrepreneurial spark that awaits inside them.

I bought this book based on the stellar "Presentation Zen" by Garr Reynolds. (A must-read if you do presentations of any type).
What I was seeking to glean from this book was how to improve the look of my PowerPoint presentations. Though Robin doesn't cover this specifically, everything she writes about can be applied to the design of the slides.
The book is aimed at 'non-professional' designers. By this I mean those of us who design things in our work, but aren't trained to do so, e.g. flyers, event alerts, newsletters, reports, business cards, studies, articles, etc.
I found it funny how often she tells us not to be "wimps" in our design choices. I mean she REALLY tells us a lot. But her point is we need ... Read More:

I made a decision about three months ago that I would use ASP.NET to create a new database-driven website. I immediately bought a couple of heavyweight reference books that came well recommended. However, as soon as I opened their covers I realised that my previous background as an Access VBA programmer was insufficient to let me leapfrog the early stages of the fairly steep ASP.NET learning curve.
A book called Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 seemed like an obvious choice to fill that gap. Luckily, it does that job very well. Unlike the two reference books I got initially, this is one that is worth reading from cover to cover. Imar Spaanjaars covers a very wide range of topics in the demo application that is the core of the book, without delving ... Read More:

This book brought me from a complete web design novice (not knowing what HTML was) to somebody who could happily and confidently code a website in CSS and HTML.
It's completely focused, and while it mentions other web technologies (Flash, Javascript), it doesn't dwell on them, leaving more time to learn the ins and outs of HTML and CSS.
Ian Lloyd is a friendly, down to earth author, which makes this book an easy one to read, and even better as a reference.

I have only just acquired Vista and the shift from Me was great. This book deals very well with the basics and explains in easy-to-follow instructions how to get off the ground. Thoroughly recommended.

I found this a really valuable book. Some of the content in the opening chapter on digital camera technology will inevitably 'age' quite quickly, but the book would have been lacking without an introduction to appropriate camera and lens hardware.
Throughout, Hoddinott repeatedly emphasises how fundamental techniques such as depth of field, composition and lighting can be managed for creative effect, and he illustrates these with an abundance of inspirational examples.
The middle section of the book is devoted to techniques for the macro photography of different subjects including still-life, natural-history, and quite a long piece on textures and patterns. Although personally I could have happily absorbed more material on wildlife ... Read More:

Brilliant, just don't buy it until you are reasonably confident with the same authors Excel reference or similar - this is not an entry level text. Worth it for the naming conventions alone!

After reading a couple of books on Agile, The Art of Agile Development does the best job of presenting all the ideas and concepts needed to start putting it all into practice. Previously I've been left with questions about how to go about implementing certain ideas or mis-understood key concepts, I felt able enough to start putting a lot of Agile and XP concepts into practice straight away.
The material itself is very digestable and written in a great down to earth manner. Rather then being a case of teacher lecturing to their student, it felt a lot like someone who's been there and gone through all the pains before hand, had come round to visit one afternoon to tell you what they had learnt and what they believe works best.
