So many books are thick, wordy, and conceal their nuggets of wisdom, but not this one. It's not big, so you won't find full details on (eg) all of the many Linux email clients - but they get a mention.
Works well for me (ex BSD 4.x sysop in the 1980s) as well as friends with no previous knowledge of operating systems. It's the examples that are such a help - most of the things we've needed to do are covered with a brief, relevant example. We use it with Ubuntu mainly - Debian distros are not identical to Fedora but we've not seen a problem - both are Linux and conform to the POSIX standard.
Reading it cover-to-cover is logical, informative, and highly recommended. Three times, and the info is starting to stick..... Then keep it ... Read More:

I used this book a lot for the first year of dental school, and I found that it goes into the right amount of depth needed for the histology part of the course. I tried Wheaters, and also the images are better than Stevens and Lowe, the content is somewhat sparing and if does not go into enough detail for a pbl based course.

This book does all it says on the tin and more. That is, it provides a perfect substitute for the manual that I would have hoped to have found in the box. But in fact it does much more than this, because it is written in a very readable style, and provides helpful tips and advice that one would not generally expect to find in the average software manual. I feel quite annoyed that I was nearly put off buying it because a couple of the earlier reviews said its presentation was poor.
In my view the presentation is absolutely fine, it's perfectly adequate for its purpose, and is well up to the standard of presentation that one should expect for a book in this price bracket. If you are looking for a manual that covers the essential fucnctions of Elements ... Read More:

As they say in Dragon's Den, "..let me tell you where I am". My experience - I am new to both Apple and Logic 8, and invested in both as technology was now able to cover my lack of formal music training.
After a months of 'playing' it was clear that the logic Pro 8 manual which comes with the package is well written, but does not offer up any projects or walkthroughs for you. This book does just that.
I thought that I was using maybe 25% of Logic's capabilities starting "raw" and self taught, but having only gone through 3 lessons so far on this book, I am surprised at what I did not know, even on basic inputs.
The DVD is structured with lessons that are logic projects and a few other artifacts to really hold your hand through ... Read More:

"This writing style is accessible and succint"-a blatent lie on the back cover. This book is about as accessible as Mars and as succint as the whole Britannica encyclopedia collection in Latin.
There is no consistency to the format. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you may learn something as this book is more likely to confuse you of the knowledge you already may have. Half of the management sections are missing or hidden in the depths of unnecessary "illustrations and figures". By the way, writing big blocks of prose in a coloured box does not make it an illustration. When you do find management sections they say things like..."use anti-staphylococcal drugs to treat staphylococcal infections". Useful.
The index is appalling and should ... Read More:

I bought this to replace my CIMA set text which was just too dull to get through.
By contrast, I really enjoyed 'Foundations of Economics'. Flowingly and elegantly written, full of interest, and incredibly accessible, I recommend it thoroughly as an introduction to the subject, especially if you're struggling with a dry, heavy or bad foundation text. Oh, and the end-of-chapter multiple-choice questions on the book's website rock!
