I am a social work student and I purchased this book at the beginning of my degree. It is very informative as to how social work began in this country. The information contained within the book is readable and set out in such a way that its easy to comprehend when you are just starting out on a degree. I thoroughly recommend this book.

a book entitled "Christian Theology" has a moral duty to cover not only Protestantism and Roman Catholicism, but also the Orthodox - both Eastern and Oriental. While this book gives a good introduction to the first two, there is almost complete lack of coverage of the third, which is most unwarranted and unfortunate, considering the spiritual wealth and contributions of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox theologians to Christianity. This book would be of very limited use to anyone interested in Christianity as it is understood and practiced by the Orthodox. Perhaps it should have been entitled "Western Christian Theology".

I bought this book after reading a serialisation in a paper, and found it a really fascinating read. Everything from prostitution to guns to drugs to cyber crime to diamonds to people trafficking is covered in a wide ranging examination of the globalised nature of the black market, and its enormous influence on society and politics.

Has a comprehensive bibliography for future research, and two sets of indicies so can be used as a text book. However you can also read it as a story book. I was surprised just how fascinating the history and development of the concepts behind each of the words described turned out to be.

While many people in the West have become familiar with words like outsourcing, offshoring and globalisation, some questions remain: what exactly do these words mean? When did globalisation as we know it begin? What are the forces that drive globalisation and what will the future of a globalised world look like? Thomas Friedman, the three-time Pulitzer prize winner, addresses these questions in an honest, informed way by arguing that the world has become flatter in the last 20 years.
The author begins by outlining the forces that led to globalisation or a flattening of the world: the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989; development of the internet and web browsers; offshoring; outsourcing; uploading (read Blogging, Youtube and the MySpace phenomenon) and ... Read More:

Stunning read. Yorkshires answer to Gone With the Wind, except its a true story. You could not make up a story like this it has enthraled everyone who has read it in our family and friends. Supprised it has never been made into a film on television series.Would outshine Brideshead Revisited.

I read this book in 24 hours- I just could not put it down. I had high expectations, having "enjoyed" Call the Midwife. I say "enjoyed" because I also found it horrifying and I cried over the stories of Mary and Mrs Jenkins.
This book doesn't disappoint, and the stories of Jane, Peggy and Frank are just as compelling. It's written in the same style as Call the Midwife so you can really get your teeth into a character's story in each chapter.
The stories are not as bleak as CTM's- Jane finds love in later life which finally helps to restore the sparkle she lost when she was badly beaten and humiliated in the workhouse. Peggy and Frank have each other, and Joseph Collett doesn't see his own situation as bleak, and is appreciative of the filthy ... Read More:

I read this book when it was first published in 2004 and recently re-read it, curious to know how well Jeffrey Liker's explanation of Toyota's management principles and lean production values have held up. My conclusion? Very well.
No good purpose would be served by merely listing the 14 management principles, out of context. Liker devotes a separate chapter to each, carefully explaining not only what it is but also how it guides and informs everyone at all levels and in all areas of the Toyota organization. What Liker also accomplishes, and what cannot be adequately summarized in a review such as this, is to explain how all 12 principles are interdependent. Together, they serve as the company's DNA. In the Preface, he recalls asking Fujio Cho (President of Toyota Motor ... Read More:

If you like adventure then you can't go far wrong with this book. During World War II, petty East End criminal Eddie Chapman finds himself banged up in occupied Jersey's prison. He is given a lifeline that he cannot refuse - come and work for German secret intelligence as a spy or face the consequences. Eddie opts for the former and is thrown into the grandiose world of a German spymaster. Now he is faced with the moral dilemma of double-crossing his country or the gamble of double crossing his new found boss. You'll have to read the book to find out which choice he makes ... I thoroughly recommend this book!
