This collection showcases some of the move evocative and throughly enjoyable plays of modern drama. Each play is at complete contrast to the others and this snippet of such diverse content adequately provides the dramatist or student with a beautiful selection of some of the best work of the 20th century. Hysteria, a play based on psychologist Freud, is a hilarious and witty script with one of the funniest scenes I've every read. It is fast paced, lucrative and a delight to absorb into the creative juices. In startling contrast to Hysteria is the shockingly brutal and provocative Blasted. Kane's career although tragically cut short sparked an explosion of appreciation and this play, one of her most well known, is stunningly superb. ... Read More:

I'm a piano teacher and have used this book with nearly 100 pupils now- it is certainly a lot better than Piano Time and 10 little fingers as it gets started with treble and bass clefs immediately and is therefore nowhere near as confusing as the books mentioned above.
However, following the reviews mentioned below, the presence of so many American tunes isn't great and the actual content of the book isn't at all different to the original 1955 version.
Book 2 of the same series is ok. The quality of the teaching is good but the material itself isn't of the same standard.

This slim volume has a nice card cover so should stand quite happily on your music stand.
All the italian terms are listed and defined in a preface.
Each piece is preceded by a short paragraph giving a little history of the piece or composer.
There is plenty of space around the staves for your own notes.
Only one piece spans more than two pages (and is the only piece that requires a page to be turned whilst playing), and that is both a slow piece and has "turn" marked in the score to remind players.
Overall an ideal book for beginners, or for sight reading practice by intermediate students.
The only thing missing is an assessment of the difficulty of the pieces (or a ... Read More:

This is the book for you if you have an interest in Drama but would like to exoand your understanding of some of the issues involved in the writing and presentation of dramatic concepts. A useful opening chapter covers the basics and then lets you delve around to deepen your understanding in whatever area you wish. You can read it chronologically or dip into particular styles or periods. The approach is simple and avoids being unnecessarily highbrow. If you are a general reader, someone who is developing an interest in drama, a student or an avid devotee then there is something here for you, I would think. I certainly picked up an enormous amount in a short time and will be returning to it in the future for more information.

I don't want to rain on the parade, but, while this is a truly great book because of its content, the production of the book is flawed enough to be problematic. The paper is much too thin, making it hard, at times, to read the text. This is especially difficult for the introductory essays, which run across the entire page width. (The text of the plays themselves is in single columns, not double, as often in complete Shakespeare editions.) So if you buy this sight unseen, as I did, be aware that your reading experience may not be optimal.

At last the Beeb has reissued series 1 +2 in their entirety to replace the 50% selection they previously served up in "collection one". Consisting of 2 plastic boxes of 3 CDs each in a superfluous cardboard cover, we finally get to revisit the full narrative of this inventive series.
In series one, the Devil, assisted by the demon, Gary, starts to question his reason for being when an amiable Physics professor (who sees only the best in people) is condemned to the infernal regions solely on the basis of his atheism. The person who killed the Professor and died in the same car crash, Thomas Crimp, is a more typically nasty minded human. A water board chairman who really did sell his own grandmother, Satan has no issue with inflicting unpleasant ... Read More:

This is the only book you will ever need if you wish to study for your grade 4 theory exam, or simply to discover a hidden world of how music is put together and the reasons behind all those rules. Every essential detail for grade 4 is covered here, including awkward time signatures such as 9/16 and 12/16, the introduction of the alto clef, a brief overview on ornaments, keys up to five sharps and flats, breves, intervals, the chromatic scale, double sharps and flats... there is enough in this book to keep the serious theory student immersed for hours at a time, and the simplistic layout ensures that the student can easily study from this book. There are appropriate amounts of exercises for you to practice newly learned skills, and, as ever, a handy list of ... Read More:
