The Prophet is about a mysterious religious thinker who is about to leave for his native land. Before he goes, many people have just one question to ask him. In a very few words, he tells them his accumulated wisdom primarily in a nondenominational way. The only exceptions come in the references to rebirth. The essence of each brief lesson is that we have to step outside of our own perspective to see things in the way that God does and wants us to.
Let me give you an example. When someone transgresses either man's laws or God's laws, we tend to condemn the person harshly and focus on punishment. This is like treating the person as though they have fallen below some level of what it is still to be human. Yet no one does anything ... Read More:

Brilliantly balanced between sorrow for those who fought for our country and satirical humour to mock the incompetence of the military which lead to the deaths of 9,000,000 people.
A very moving play, even better when performed. A must buy!

i havn't got my results back for my English Lit GCSE but i'm quietly confident.I got an a star in the mock on the revision of this book alone as it goes into all the questions posed by golding throughout the ingenious novel. i've used numerous guides and helpers but this is one of the best i've used. All you need to know...could do with a few more concise quotes though...so i'll give it 4.

Clearly aimed at the not-so-bright American who likes to think he/she is cultured. Many American poets and spellings. The cover of a miserable girl is off putting enough!
You are better off with Penguin's "Poetry for Life".

If you are new to the works of Samuel Beckett then this is the best place to start in my opinion. There is nothing I can add which hasn't already been said about these dramas, only that they are quite short and moderately accessible but almost inexhaustable in their complexity. To describe these works as 'existentialist' really doesn't do them justice or decribe their nature to any deep degree. The plays are unique and must be experienced to be understood. Generally there is a quite dark tone to most of the works, sometimes obscenely disturbing, sometimes cynically funny but at times there are moments of true poetic beauty. I would strongly recommend these plays to anyone interested in drama of a more unconventional type. High points include ... Read More:

No,not an autobiography but the thoughts on parents, grandparents and photograph of never to be known person in ravaged photograph were fascinating. His brother features greatly in his meanderings althought I sensed a degree of frustration that brother's thoughts did not tally with his at most times.
Thoughts of pre death anticipation and death itself, along with a possible afterlife and existence,or non existence of God were approached from many angles, leaving the reader to make up his/her mind on the subject. Also one or two unique views on the perception of a God..thought provoking.
Not an easy book to read, and you could easily give up in trying to follow his thoughts......"what the hell is he trying to say now?" You may even find ... Read More:

This book is a work of genius for the whole, exquisitely written it offers wisdom on most pages and nonsense on the others. It's been a very long time since I learnt such a large amount, the language has a poetic beauty to it and anybody interested in governance should read this. The thesis of the book is well known (as it indeed should be) but there are some startling facts about the author. Rousseau was serial child abandoner; he seems to have left five children in foundling hospitals and when attacked by his critic, a certain Voltaire, his defence was that the he would have been a poor father and his children would fair better in a foundling hospital. A slightly implausible fact given the high mortality rate at the founding hospital. Still, we judge him ... Read More:

This book has a lot of useful exercises to do at home between classes to practise all the new grammar that's been introduced in the different chapters. It also has a key to all the exercises so you can check them yourself.
A word of warning though. The instructions aren't always very clear, particularly not to beginners, so you might need a teacher to explain them to you. There are also no explanations so it's not always easy to see what you've done wrong and why it's wrong. Furthermore, there's a lot of typos, both in the main part of the book and in the answer section so don't always accept something as wrong, do ask your teacher if you think it's supposed to be right.
