For the benefit of those who don't really follow online blog personalities, Crazy Aunt Purl is the moniker undergone by Laurie Perry. A Texican who migrated to California, she got married, invested her selfworth and mental wellbeing in her husband, only for him to split. In despair she started a blog to chart her new life and its progress as it were, and well, her blog just became great. She was nominated for Blog of the year in 2005/6.
In the world of knitting, Crazy Aunt Purl is rather like the yarn Harlot (Stephanie Pearl-McPhee) in the sense that you go to her blog to garner a laugh and get the odd insight be it life or love (for knitting). No patterns there!
The difference is that The Yarn Harlot was born in the ... Read More:

I bought this book a few years ago, and I absolutely love it! If headlines such as 'weasels tore my flesh' are your cup of tea, this is the book for you. (Or just about any other creature, really - eels, snakes....)

This is a personal quest into the life of an illustrious relation of the author, inspired by a remarkable painting. Who was this provocative Katey? How could she dictate the style of her portrait to an artist of such standing as Millais?
I really enjoyed this enthusiastic book. It doesn't talk down to the reader, despite obviously being extremely well researched, and isn't too girly for a simple fellow like me. Katey was the favourite daughter of Charles Dickens so found herself at the centre of the very first celebrity phenomenon. She would easily relate to today's awful Hello! culture.
In many ways Katey was ahead of her time. The scope for scandal back then was immense and perhaps due to her flirtatious nature the attractive ... Read More:

I am just starting to read about the life of Virginia Woolf, her family and contemporaries. I was a little wary of this book as I thought it may be just about houses and places but what a surprise! I could not put it down and found it so informative not just about the locations Virginia and her family stayed at for holidays but it also gave so many insights as to what was happening to them at those periods in their lives. It was absolutely wonderful! This author is obviously a very knowledgeable lady when it comes to the Bloomsbury Set.

I visited the exhibition in Manchester which this book accompanies, and I can testify that this is up to Jan Marsh's usual high standards - a comprehensive selection of works hardly ever seen before in public, and a complete new collection of artists, covered in the kind of lavish detail one has come to expect of this author. While some may disagree with one or two of the more polemical aspects of her analysis, there is no faulting the presentation of images! My own collection of Marie Spartali works has expanded beyond expectations as a result of this book, for example!
