The pictures in this book are designed to encourage children to talk about the book and predict what might happen next. The opening page shows a detailed scene, which introduces the main characters and vocabulary that appear in throughout the book. The book has essential style for early readers, simple straight forward sentences, large clear type, an easy to read font, repeated phases, lively humorous illustrations and a close match between pictures and words. It is part of a series of popular, traditional tales written in a simple way that young children can understand and read. `Goldilocks and the Three Bears' is a Read It Yourself Book; it is especially considered for children who are ready to take their first steps in reading.

Many parents and children will be familiar with Winnie the Witch and her cat Wilbur from the picture books by Valerie Thomas.
Laura Owen has teamed up with Korky Paul who illustrated the original picture books to provide short chapter books about the zany witch designed for the newly confident reader.
There are four short stories in this book, each complete in itself and at just the right length for a young reader to feel a real sense of achievement when they've read to the end.
The Korky Paul illustrations are the link between the original pictures books and these early readers. Here the illustrations are in black and white but they lose none of their original energy and humour. Even the page numbers ... Read More:

NFER Nelson are the company that set the real 11+ Verbal Reasoning papers in many parts of the country - certainly they set them in the Essex area. I have been using them for years with my pupils as part of the final preparation. We have now changed to the Multiple Choice style, so I have found myself having to get a whole new set, as a result of which, I have discovered that ...
... if you live in the CSSE (Essex 11+) area, Amazon supply the whole set quite a bit cheaper when bought from here than when bought from the consortium!
Exactly the same pack from the Consortium - £11.99
from other book shops - £9.99
Here - It varies - but it's usually ... Read More:

Although supposedly a book for younger audiences, the Wee Free Men would be enjoyable for any Discworld fan no-matter what their age. The book follows Tiffany Aching, a young farmgirl who must deal with an invasion of nightmare creatures, the disappearance of her younger brother and her own burgeoning power. All she has to help her is a frying pan, a book on the Diseases of the Sheep and the Wee Free Men, tough and drunken pictsies who enjoy a good fight.
Although the book does get off to something of a bad start it does pick up as you read and it turns into a greatly entertaining story. Terry Pratchett is a brilliant righter and this book is a great exposition of his strengths being funny, thoughtful and inventive all at the same time. ... Read More:

Did your copy have 187 pages? If it had more, I would very much like to know how your version finishes. I and others have commented on how Ms. Fitzgerald leaves a certain ambiguity at the end of some of her works. She invites her readers to finish the story based on what she has shared, or the reader has understood. This time around, I first felt I was reading a work like Dickens' unfinished, "The Mystery of Edwin Droid". However this time it was a bit abrupt, a door opens, the reader pops their head in, and, she decapitates the reader with an efficiency that Dr. Guillotine would have admired.
This is the fifth of her nine novels I have read, and it will be difficult to top this work. Everything I have read has been excellent, so the ... Read More:

I bought this book on the strength of the other reviews and it did not disappoint. The illustrations are lovely, and I was delighted to see depictions of breastfeeding the new baby included.

I was keen to buy a book that would help my three year to not only learn the letters of the alphabet but to also learn the sounds using phonics as well. I thought buying this book would help. Instead, I found the characters dry and the plot of each story tiresome.
Each sound has the letter written in black and white with arrows showing the way the word is to be written, which is helpful. Then in the margin, there are examples of words to match the letter sounds- but they are tiny. Hard to see let alone read. And I don't mean to be petty but the pictures look more freakish then cute.
It was really difficult trying to get my daughter to sit and read the book, because she simply was not interested in the stories or characters whatsoever! ... Read More:

I came across this book later in its history, as a fantasy & science fiction fan of some 30 years. Favourite books being Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Dune etc.
Sabriel isn't really like those books at all and not just `cause it's (allegedly) written for young teenagers.
It's different due to its more downbeat and sombre tone and the feeling that the evil forces might actually win.
It does remind me a little of C.J. Cherryh's "Chronicles of Morgaine" in that it has a totally believable & completely un-stereotypical heroine (Sabriel) and with a similar down beat tale of a dying world.
The book is also a little like Harry Potter in that there is some magic in the `real' world but there is another world next ... Read More:
