I was given this book as a baby shower gift when i was pregnant with my first, and i was always referring to it as i watched my son grow up, there was always a photo or thought or moment to record or i found myself going through it and wondering 'oh i must look out for when my son....' it really helps you notice your childs development.
I decided to purchase a different book when pregnant with my 2nd child, but the book i bought just didnt compare to this one. this has everything, sections for filling in thoughts, photos prior to birth, then special moments straight after the birth, and next few years of development. i had to purchase this again! it has now been improved with even more added pages for thoughts and special moments (has ... Yes!It's a beautiful illustrated book! But reading the story it gave me a feeling something isn't right.Ok:the beautiful fish is arrogant but is the answer to this to give parts of his body away to make friends? To me the story is about a little jealous fish who wants to be as beautiful as the bigger fish. The little jealous fish also tells all his friend how "bad" the beautiful fish is because he doesn't want to share parts of his body. When he gives away it's beauty, the other fish like him. This is certainly not a message I want to give my child!Enjoy your beauty, but it doesn't make you better than anybody else. And for sharing,to give things,to become friends:I think there are better books than this one:The tiger who came to tea-Smile crocodile, smile ... This is another kids book by the winning team of Neil Gaiman and David McKean who did the excellent; The Wolves in the Walls. This is less dark than The Wolves, and has more of a gentle humour which follows a traditional fairy tale pattern, that of the kind of knock on effect. The boy swaps his father for two goldfish, but when forced by his mother to go and get him back, he has to chase about town as other children swap on the dad before the boy gets there.
I love the fact that the mother is cross but only mildly, rather as if the boy had tracked mud on the carpet, and the fact that the father is completely unaware that he is being swapped, being too engrossed in the paper. It's lovely. The boy's bickering relationship with his sister ... Read More:

I recently bought this book to add to my classroom library with a view to looking at the effects of the Second World War on children. Although year 6 children usually consider themselves 'above' picture books; this (along with the equally beautiful Rose Blanche) has to be an exception. this is not a picture book for young children - it is that rare thing; a picture book aimed at 9 year olds and above. (Children younger than that would find the content disturbing and hard to understand.)
The illustrations, typical of Shirley Hughes, are wonderful; and the story line is great, helping to clarify the children's insight into life during the Second World War. The child's emotions are captured well, and the story is very well written. I shall ... Read More:

A wonderful book that brings back many personal childhood memories! Extremely thought-provoking and accentuated by illustrations that are as memorable as they are loveable. This short children's book is clearly to be enjoyed by Years 1 and 2, but as ever is dependant upon ability.
The story at face value is of a businessman's new ambition to build a rocket and fly to the moon. The process of building the rocket severely damages the delicate forest and grassland surrounding him and his company, but he succeeds in his aim nonetheless. But when he lands on the moon, he realises that there is nothing much to see... apart from Earth.
The moral to the book is then spiced up with living dinosaurs that decide to break up all the rubbish ... Read More:

My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".
In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense.
All-in-all, a disappointing follow-up to the excellent original.

this is the ultimate book for any young growing child. I heard this book when I was a kid and now I am doing the same to my own child, thats how much of a classic it is. this comes with a soft toy of a catterpillar which can weave in and out of the book to symbolise him eating an apple. This was a great buy and you have days and days of enjoyment ahead

My little boy's favourite book. The rhyming couplets really appeal to him. He is only 8 months old but as soon as I pick up THIS book, he gets really excited. He giggles along at certain lines and it never fails to settle him down.
Just brilliant.
