My son Daniel and I love this little board book. It is just the right size and robust enough for him to be involved in holding and turning the pages. There are also small board flaps which assist the unfolding story. The illustrations have a gorgeous warmth and the colouring of the book has a creamy ochre tone and earthy colours which capture the woodland feel of the story. The story is of a little bear in bright red waist coat, writing letters to his friends and delivering them each at their different homes around the wood. There is a sense of anticipation until all the letters are delivered and then, delightfully, one of the flaps becomes that of an envelope which you open to invite you and bear's friends to come to his party. ... "This old man, he played one, he played knick-knack on my drum". I never understood what a knick-knack was as a child and am non-the-wiser now. However I always loved this catchy rhyme. I bought the book to enhance the singing of the rhyme to my first toddler.
The book is pleasant enough, but I don't feel that the illustrations marry up to the rhyme particularly well. For instance, "This old man, he played two, he played knick-knack on my shoe" is illustrated by a dancing pirate who has a wooden leg! Also, each page has a cut-out hole and the number of holes, and the pictures that you see through them don't have much of a bearing on the rhyme or the number in question.
There are better nursery-rhyme books out there ... Read More:

excellent for little fingers to learn to turn pages. book is hardwearing and my son enjoyed feeling each page. the book isn't too big for a child to hold, and is relatively light. I was well pleased and am ordering more in the same range!

My 14-month old baby has copied all the actions in this book and loves for me to read it to her again and again. She adores the bouncy bouncy and all fall down. A very interactive book!

This book has been totally lapped up by my 8 month old. He grasps the 3d tadpoles and gets extremely excited by the final surprise pop-up page which shows the tadpoles' tranformation into frogs. The pop-up opens out to make a croaking sound effect simply from the cut of .
Absolutely brilliant, colourful, fun and a simple learning tool for counting. I highly recommend it for young children - but be careful of the paper - it's not a board book.
