Karen Geoghegan has well and truly brought the bassoon out of the shadows of the orchestral ranks to record a fantastic debut album. It has it all - fireworks, beautiful singing tone, fabulous control with great attention to detail.

Karen has been able to give her bassoon-playing a quality that at times sounds with the richness of a trombone, at other times with a tone like a saxaphone or clarinet. With such versatility it is wonder we are not all more familiar with the instrument and its repertoire.

The Opera North Orchestra and Benjamin Wallfisch have worked together to provide a sensitive backdrop to this outstanding performer.

I'm with Michael Hamilton on this one. Loads of polyphony in search of a melody and most irritating, particularly track 6 (When David heard) where the interminable "My son" had me tearing my hair out(at least the bit that's left!) Save your money and try the excellent Polyphony in " Nocturnes" or "Lux aeterna" by Morten Lauridson.

It has to be said that there is little more versatile as the human voice as an instrument. This proves the point beyond measure.
Clarity, emotion and total respect for the piece are in abundance throughout the album.
Wonderful.

The budget price doesn't reflect the quality of this 2 disc collection of classical music highlights, for the soloists, orchestras, conductors and the recordings themselves ensure it is a good quality selection of mostly familiar music from the classical music repertoire.

The choices lean heavily towards the opera style, so for that reason alone will not be the only album necessary to cover everyone's taste - even the complete classical beginner will find many of their familiar favourites are absent.

The tracks are mostly single movements from the whole score, which may not please the more enthusiastic classical fan, but it's unavoidable given the short time permitted by only 2 CDs. In any case, this album really is ... Read More:

New Dawn

Where does one begin. The latest album from LIBERA (new dawn) is out of this world. The selections are wonderful and Robert Prizeman as usual, has given us more of his wonderful music, that I personally feel, comes from God. The harmonies are breath taking and each solo is beautiful. I would like to say something about every soloist, but that would take way too long. From the six soloists I have chosen two to tell you about. The first is Tom Cully. Tom's voice will send shivers all over your body. He has a beautiful voice and his range will astound you. He also hits a few notes that will amaze you. In my opinion, his voice gets better every time I hear him sing. The other soloist I enjoy hearing, and watching is Josh Madine. This is the page for the wonderful ROH production. All the other reviews in this section are for a Salzburg production. Don't know what that is like, but this - the ROH production - is great, with a believably young and predatory Count, a splendid Susanna (Persson) and so on.
