Firefly - The Complete Series [2003]

I don't write too many reviews but felt compelled to write one for this series. I hadn't seen or even really heard of Firefly but saw it at a good price, the reviews were excellent and I thought I had nothing to loose in buying it. As it turns out, it is one of the best things I have had the pleasure of watching. The characters seem real and you quickly get to care about them, the action is great, the script is sharp and humorous and the story arc is wonderful considering there was only one 14 episode series. After finishing this I bought the film Serenity, which follows on from about two months after the series finished. Again; it was excellent. Death At A Funeral [2007]

What can go wrong at a funeral? Seemingly everything, as this extremely funny dark comedy will show you. I didn't expect much, despite the positive buzz, but English director Frank Oz surprised me. Give "Death at a funeral" a chance, this bizarre film will make you laugh :)

The movie Serenity is one of the most underrated movies of all time. The characters are funny and interesting, the plot is gripping and the end space battle alone makes this movie worth buying. im personally lookin forward to a region two version of this Collector's Edition!

I bought this having owned the DVD and thought it would be a film that would benefit from the advantages of HD. I'm not disappointed, thankfully. The picture is stunning.

As for the film, I think it's one of Will Smith's best yet often underated. Sure, it's no Oscar winner but as a quick fix of stunning special effects with a decent storyline it more than fits the bill. Enjoy!

Oh dear.

There is something very patronising about the whole tone of the film. You never quite buy in to it's characters or premise. It has aspirations of being profound, but is in fact just plain predictable and at times so twee it makes ice cream seem like a diet snack.

It was also a shame to see a talent like Steve Buscemi wasted in such a pile of nonsense.

This movie is better than the award winning American Beauty. Wonder Boys is one of those rare modern American movies that really stand out in the pile of relative trash that comes out of there. Along with 'Lost In Translation', this film helped to restore my faith in modern Hollywood. The Michael Douglas character is a gem; his performance shows Douglas aging gracefully and willingly, an accomplishment that only a couple of famous leading men have achieved in recent years.

I rented this and have to say that I was disappointed by the visual quality of the film on Blu Ray. I do not actually think it was any better than the DVD (which I own) except marginally. For perhaps a couple of scenes the picture quality was good and clearly HD.

I have to disagree with the other reviewer who says that the picture quality is outstanding, it is not at all. Plenty of grain and not a sharp picture.

As for the sound, either 5.1 or PCM uncompressed. As my amplifier does not have an HDMI slot I cannot use PCM uncompressed sound and so cannot comment on that. the 5.1 sound was ok but again no better than the DVD.
