Doctor Who - Series 4 Vol.4 [2008]

This DVD concludes series 4 with the final three episodes which work as a single story arc. I was one of the fans eagerly awaiting this years finale but unfortunately it left a bitter after taste (and to explain why I will include SPOILERS).

The first episode, Turn Left, was an ok affair. The premise for this storyline is Donna, due to the results of a time beetle, experiences what her life would have been like had she not have met the doctor. This episode sees the return of Billie Piper as Rose Tylor, who comes back to help Donna in this alternative reality. These 3 episodes are far and away the best of series four. Great writing and terrific performances.

'Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead' is probably the best two-parter yet. It's a tense, chilling story with twists and turns that keeps delivering surprises all the way to the end.

And, for those of us who find Catherine Tate more irritating than a bag of Adipose, there's the pleasure of a virtually Donna-free episode in the form of the excellent 'Midnight'. After the Doctor leaves Donna stuffing her face with chocolates a couple of minutes into the show, she's not seen again until the very end. Bliss!

Doctor Who : Complete BBC Series 4 [2008]

After what I felt to be a very dissapointing season three, this new season represents something of a return to form for Doctor Who. The stories are never less than watchable (especially when it stays clear of Russel T Davies' own mythology)and can be excellent ('Planet of the Ood,' 'Silence in the Library.') I just feel like the season as a whole could have been even better if they'd just stuck to the task of making a TV series instead of trying to be clever.
The Good News first. Ignore all the quibbles from various sections of Who fandom and take it from me. Catherine Tate is a revelation as Donna Noble. In fact, I'd rank her as the best female foil for the Doctor since Elisabeth Sladen's Sarah-Jane Smith was in her pomp in the seventies. DW fans from the old ... Read More:

Series 4 of the new Doctor Who has been in my opinion, one of the finest series ever. David Tennant remains as brilliant as ever, and if anything changes, it's that he can only get better as time goes on. Catherine Tate, has surprised and amazed me, with her portrayal of Donna Noble in this series, making the character such a credible, efficient and lovable assistant to the Doctor.

All this excellence continues in this fine volume of the fourth series, as Russell T Davies revives another old villainous race from the Doctor's past, introduces more allies and facts from the Time Lord's past (the older series to be exact) and includes some more good old interaction with one of history's greatest figures.

This is a definite comeback for Doctor Who after the lamentable time of Martha Jones who to me was a very one dimensional character. Catherine Tate, who isn't constantly in awe of the Doctor, adds a lot of humour to proceedings.

The first episode, "Partners in Crime" was not scary as such but made you think and featured great turns by Sarah Lancashire as Miss Foster and Verona Joseph (Jess from Holby City) as nosy a journalist. The Adipose were also the cutest monster in existance.

Episode number two, "The Fires of Pompeii" is probably the weakest episode as the monsters were neither scary nor particularly thought provoking. Starter For 10 [2006]

In a nutshell: Set in the mid-80s, James McAvoy plays Brian Jackson, a working-class Essex boy with a thirst for knowledge who realises a dream to go to university (in this case Bristol) and enter University Challenge. On the way he falls in love with a beautiful blonde member of the quiz team but ultimately realises it's the plainer, but still attractive, brunette who is the girl for him - a la 'Gregory's Girl'.

Fear not, the above `love twist' I revealed won't spoil the plot for you. It's made blatantly clear within the first 15 minutes that this is what will happen. And that's maybe the problem with the movie - it's all a bit predictable and safe - save for a fantastic twist in the University Challenge studios.

it is a fabulous tour de force of an episode and Catherine Tate is the BOMB she is so fantastic and is hilarious...unlike some of the previous episodes i can watch this and it gets better every time(seen 8 times now)it has a great villain for Donna and the doctor to face and all my family managed to sit down and watch it and ENJOY it.
Sarah Parish makes a great arachnid (haha)i want an action figure of her on my shelf(why no box set of the figures any way?).
i'm glad that Donna made her come back in series four(which is the best series so far(only 3 episodes to go))Catherine and David are really competitive with their acting which makes the chemistry on screen an excellent watch.

i thought this dvd was fantastic, i watched it time and again and found it hillarious every time, especially the tony blair sketch, i still laugh at it today this is definately one worth buying.

A truly terrible film. I still watched it to the end in the same way people watch the wreckage from car accidents. It was un-intentionaly funny, it has the same other worldly view of London that Notting Hill had. The only people i really had any time for were the old couple. All the rest i couldnt care less for. Bunch of pretentious idiots.
That annoying young bloke chatting-up anything that moves, where was his accent from? Ewan mcgregor playing a North London gay, how obvious. The couple being ever so nice and relaxed about their imminent divorce, is that for real?
Basicly i cant understand what the films about, apart from saying; Come up to Hampstead Heath in the summer! its really nice, you may find the odd gay hanging around in the bushes, and meet the odd burk, but apart from that, its lovely!

Bad Mother's Handbook (Catherine Tate) [2006]

I watched this on a whim, and I'm glad I did! At first glance I was a bit apprehnsive about Tate's ability to successfully portray a believable character without going over the top and turning to just making us laugh. However, I was surprised at how much she makes you like/dislike/like her character throughout by connecting with us, which is a hard thing to do! But there were some well placed parts which had me laughing lots (the peanuts!) subtly done but added at just the right places to appear seamlessly with the story and not done just for comedy effect. Watching the relationships between all of the characters and what it means to be a 'mum' was beautifully done, and although I can't place exactly what made it such an enjoyable watch which can be watched over and over...
