Great special effects, but not a very good story, looks like it was trying to prop up the poor storyline with the special effets and the actors.
In all a disappointing movie.

The worst Bond movie I have ever watched. Very violent, totally confusing story line, lacking any humour with a Bond who could seemed old enough to be a grandad, despite being at the beginning of his career. Perhaps I missed the best bits when I fell asleep in the middle, but I doubt it. I shall not bother to watch it again - time better used filling in tax forms.

First of all let me say that I think this is a great Bond film. Not that some earlier ones weren't, they were good for their era but it seems that now 'we' want a gritty hero, not a romantic vision of a spy.
In that I think DC plays the role very well.
What did surprise me was that some of the film displayed poor image quality. The part that springs to mind is the scene in the embassy courtyard. The camera switches from Bond to his persuers and back and forth again.
The change in definition quality changes dramaticaly between one and the other camera shot. I thought I must have a fault but a friend at work had noticed the same thing. Strange for a recent film to have this problem.
Probably a case that the two camera angles were shot at ... Read More:

The trailer looked great and I had high hopes for this movie. Especially after seeing stardust. But this is a hopeless childish movie, produced for another braindead generation that thinks over the top means big bucks.
Too bad, they got a good cast, great sets but really poor directing. And it is missing the sense of fun and wit Stardust had so much of. Absolutely no joy to watch.

What might attract people to this film? It's a sci-fi story of good heritage, Kidman, Craig and Northam in lead roles and everything seemed to be in place for a riveting watch.
But it's not. It feels thin and unfulfilled throughout...the plot builds and builds and then it seems like the producers got bored with their own movie and brought the story to an abrupt end. I gave it two stars because Ms Kidman is always very watchable, but with Daniel Craig it reminded me of some of the naff films Roger Moore did alongside his tenure as bond. I'm sure Craig will shortly redeem himself in the next 007 outing.
There is some good atmospheric cinematography and stunt work, but everything considered it's a bit of a disappointment. And a waste of a good Jag...

The packaging says 'best bond for decades'. Oh.
Problem is I have seen them all, have them all, and this is...well.
Graphics based on computer games rather than real life, so aimed at new generation I guess, but is there really any need to carry over the limitations of games graphics into a film when real actors are available?
Dialogue - oh dear.
Pace - tedious.
Plot - well, I guess there was one.
Music - probably.
Action - repetitive.
Poker - oh, so sophisiticated. Yawn.

This film is based on the first book in the best selling `His Dark Materials' series by Phillip Pullman and although I haven't read any of that series I did enjoy this adaptation. As I have not read the book that this film is based on I cannot comment about how close it is to that but from the comments of others I can deduce that this isn't too good an adaptation but I feel that it more than makes up for this with some truly spectacular CGI and some adequate performances by the all star cast.
Of the cast Nicole Kidman as the villainous Mrs Coulter was a surprising favourite of mine as I have never previously enjoyed any of her performances but she was unexpectedly good here. Another noteworthy performance was that of Sir Ian McKellen, he is always enjoyable and he was very ... Read More:

A huge dissappointment. Having read Alison Weir's book on Elizabeth 1st, I was amazed by the inaccuracy's in the film. The story of Elizabeth is exciting and captivating in it's own right and doesn't need poetic licence to improve it. Sadly the inaccuracies totally spoiled the film for me. Wilikipedia gives a very good precis of all the inaccuracies.
