Although I enjoyed this film I'd have to say that an awful lot is sacrificed to DDL's acting. The fact that what everyone talks about is his performance says it all really. He is fantastic, but that's largely due to the fact that nobody else seems to get a word in edgeways.Paul Dano does his best, but like every other character he pops in and out of the film without any great rhyme or reason. There are a few faults, like other reviewers, I was confused for a long time by Dano playing identical twin brothers and there are other elements of the film that are confusing.Dano's congregation grows without the town ever seeming to, and the religous elements are only introduced in short, sharp bursts. But none of this really matters because the film is ... Read More:

This film is so romantic and well acted. If you have not seen it is a must have if you like period drama's, I have watched it time and again and never bored.

This is one of my all time favourite movies. Great mix of acting, action, drama, audio, and video all wrapped around a superb story.
Don't get the director's cut, the original is almost perfect.
I'm still of the belief that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The theatrical release wasn't broke.
I just found out that the original was available in the UK and ordered it, because it is not available in North America. Review is from Canada.

There Will Be Blood is without a doubt one of the best films I have seen all year and also one of the best films I have laid my eyes on! The plot of the film is about a prospector called Daniel Plainview (Played by Mr Day-Lewis) Plainview is working with a team of men on a primitive oil well. One of his workers is killed in an accident, and Plainview takes the man's orphaned child as his own. His successes allow him to expand his enterprise, and he negotiates for new leases with a sales pitch that he is family man with a family business with his son, H.W., as his partner. Plainview soon gets a tip off to the presence of oil in Little Boston, California. Plainview and H.W. travel there and find oil seeping to the surface of the ground and attempt to buy the property from the ... Read More:

Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .... ... ... ... ... .... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .... ... ... ... ... .... ... After being caught dancing naked in the woods, Abigail Williams hatches a plan with the other girls in the village. Abigail claims that she has been fighting to save her own soul, as she is surrounded by people who worship the devil. Instead of dismissing these claims as foolish ramblings of a young girl, the town elders encourage her hysteria. Accusations fuelled by provincial politics, greed, spite, paranoia, and fear become commonplace. Many people are forced ... Read More:

This was a fantastic, emotional, and fustrating story of how injustice can come out political expediancy. It tells the story of how the British establishment cared little about punishing the guilty as long as they were seen to punish someone. If anyone has any doubts about how torture and questionable interrogation methods have no place in a civilised society (not to mention the fact that it produces inaccurate results) watch this movie. It will make you despair for the British legal system.
A flawless central performance by DDL would normally be a shoe in for an oscar but perhaps the political story influenced the cautious oscar panel.

This film/movie is absolutely awful, dreadfully violent, pretty disgusting, and likely to be nightmare-inducing, but it is totally riveting, nonetheless - I give it five stars, but I don't recommend watching it and won't do so myself again!

Really poor. The story line is dull. I could not see what the point of the film was. There were no major "themes" raised. Apparently the novel it is based on shows the ugly side of the oil industry / American capitalism. This doesnt really come across either.
With Daniel Day Lewis, they had the perfect actor to play a vile, capitalist monster but even he disappoints. The other reviewer hit the nail on the head. His acting is overly self-indulgent, all shouty and over dramatic (a bit Pacino-esque). The "overacting vein" in the middle of the forehead frequently pops out. As for the Best Actor Oscar, this was given out of guilt for not giving it for Gangs of New York, because this performance is overly thespy, and because the film itself is an American Period film, Oscar's favourite.

I am rating this movie three stars as the result of some complicated mathematics, of which the detail is as follows:
- basically, this is a ONE star movie. Why? Because in this movie virtually NOTHING happens! And this is a REEEAAAAALLLLYYYYY long one - 132 minutes is not a small thing to swallow, believe me, I know! Now, this kind of movie can be very dangerous. The first time I went to see it, I was with a date. Now, this date was to become later my fiance, then my bride, my life companion and ultimately the mother of my children. All of which almost didn't happen, because of this movie! Even now, after all this time, my wife reminds me "The Age of Innocence" disaster if she wants to put me down. So, be warned - this is a VERY long nothing!
- I must give however one more star for Michelle Pfeiffer. ... Read More:

This is a Classic Film make no mistake about it. Yes, it is slow but it is meant to be.
Is it a faithful adaptation of the book? I would say yes considering the source material. The book contains whole sections of intellectual pondering regarding the internal struggle involved in passionate love. These passages are unfilmable.
What we have here is a very European film dripping with cold sexuality and emotional torture. The Actors, the Director and all involved in this production should feel very proud of what they have achieved.
The Direction is confident and fresh. The performances are faultless. Juliette Binoche is truly a remarkable actor. Her desperation is beautifully played. I have to say that this is one of the best displays of acting I think I have ever seen ("I know he loves me, I know ... Read More:
