Shape-shifting demons, abducted chidren, a disappearing uncle who is in fact Lyra's father, an evil society woman,'Egyptians', polar bears, beautiful witches and Cossacks bursting into flames when slain...It can't be entirely the film-makers' fault, surely? Pullman's oeuvre seems to have a great following, but that means nothing nowadays when crowds go mad about the most idiotic books. The film is a cauldron of complete confusion, the plot and ideas are utterly preposterous. YET, perversely, the whole surreal spectacle is oddly compelling to watch -- as something dreamt up by an opium-eater or a psychiatric patient. Hence the high rating.

Considered a good demo film for blu-ray but not as startlingly good as for example Planet Earth. The film is quite different to most Bond films and lacks the futuristic gadgets of the others. It has a lot of violence for a 12 rated film but fortunately none is too explicit - and the absence of unnecessary swearing is a welcome relief. Might take you some time to understand what the film is all about, but you do have nearly two and a half hours to catch up!
Yes, some are better than others. Some Bonds are *certainly* better than others. But they're all the the same action-packed, no-brain-required, formulaic-but-fun glorious mess of boys' toys (explained by a grumpy 'Q' - 'DO try to pay attention, 007...'), glamor girls, explosions, wacky bad-guys and political incorrectness. Yep, this is the good stuff we've come to expect from a Bond Movie.
And then they made Casino Royale...
I'm sure a lot of people will love to see Bond reinvented like this, but if you're an old time fan like me, you won't. All the traditional elements are gone. It's all become deadly serious, to the point where it verges ... Read More:

I found this film rather uncomfortable to watch, it seemed hollow and pretentious and made me squirm in my seat...I can see what it wanted to be but in my opinion in fell very short of the mark.

The 194-minute director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven gives the film more room to breathe, but it won't make converts of the unbelievers. Instead, it's a more leisurely paced version of the film for the faithful who liked the theatrical cut and want to revisit its world and characters in a little more detail. Closer in style and tone to sixties roadshows than Scott's Gladiator, and all the better for it, in many ways it's the richest and most ambitious of the recent batch of epics. It's more of a journey in the extended version, and a bloodier one (the added violence will please the gore hounds), although there are a few moments that tip over into self-indulgence and could have been tightened or omitted entirely.
The extended opening allows more character ... Read More:

The Golden compass came out just after Stardust (great movie btw), further more amazing union of Craig and Kidman (The Invasion) you know you won't be disappointed. It is great movie however while watching the it I found myself lost with the story plot sometimes, and it seemed like the movie suffered some kind of editing sacrifices...
Therefore recently I have reached for the book and I am overwhelmed!!! It's difficult to describe how amazing it is. Everything cleared; Now I love the movie unconditionally!
I was reading recently that they might not me The Subtle Knife adaptation, because The Golden Compass performed badly. Performed badly because the story is not finished yet, and everyone should reach for the book, if they don't fully understand the movie. However ... Read More:
