The attempt at justifying the dumping of a child at a hotel is a particular low point in this film, which -for me- drags dreadfully. My only sympathy lay with the chap who (forced by circumstances, it appears) jumps out of a window - seemingly a victim of fortune, the other actors/actresses and the author.

I noticed that one 5-star review referred to the emphasis on every action - including the quality of the acting in even basic activities like turning off a light. Maybe it's a sad reflection on myself that I'm not impressed by such details, nor by the time-shifting and mingling of a range of character traits. I do like this film but it is very, very American. Why ??

Did any of the classic Ealing comedies cater for Americans. Why do we do this so much.

Apparently Victoria Wood wrote a script of the same story but this one got made because it had an American part to it.

No doubt someone will make Wuthering Heights soon with Heathcliff going to America in his " missing" years.

Helen Mirren and Julie Walters are sooooo good in the film.

Kinky Boots has its funny moments with Lola however this film is your average chick flick - it's amusing the first time you watch it but it loses its value after that. It is a film to see once but not to purchase.

East Is East is nothing less than a masterpiece!

This film is appealing to so many people for so many different reasons. I am someone who is not that keen on modern films - not least because of their violence, crudity and constant flow of unnecessary bad language; however, despite what can only be described as this film's appallingly frequent and 'filthy' dialogue, it incredibly does not detract from what is otherwise a very sensitive and altogether 'human' story, and indeed contributes to much of the comedy and humour of the movie throughout. Anyone like myself who is old enough to have lived through 1971 will appreciate the sheer mastery at which the cast were able to recreate that particular era to utter perfection.

This film is a must for everyone. I enjoy Lee Evans' stand up, but was a little sceptical about how he would appear on the big screen. He was an absolute revelation, brilliantly acted and his timing is pure perfection.

I'd watched half of this film a while back but for some reason had never bothered to finish it, I'm so consumed with watching films that sometimes i trip over myself in eagerness to watch as many as possible, resulting in missing out on half the storylines!!This film was a brilliant, edgy thriller based on Jekyll and Hyde with Julia Roberts as the shy and naive maid whom fnds out about the Dr's weird and wacky disease. A very interesting concept and some great performances from Roberts and Malkovich whom happens to be one of my favourites. Well worth the watch on a windy and scary night.
