Although I already knew about US involvement in the covert war, it was interesting to see it splashed onto screen - not sure how the US Govt feel about it as it shows them being dragged into helping via Wilson, et al, rather than being proactive about it! The cast do a great job at getting into the skin of the characters they portray. I feel the film portray's Wilson's frustrations very well. Having rented the film, it is one I do feel I would buy. However - along with several comments here - that UNICEF advert at the beginning is incredibly annnoying. Was staggered that could not fast forward it, skip it, or get to the Menu. Never come across that before and it really wound me up as had to endure it. More likely to contrbute to UNICEF as a ... Read More:
This film is appealing to so many people for so many different reasons. I am someone who is not that keen on modern films - not least because of their violence, crudity and constant flow of unnecessary bad language; however, despite what can only be described as this film's appallingly frequent and 'filthy' dialogue, it incredibly does not detract from what is otherwise a very sensitive and altogether 'human' story, and indeed contributes to much of the comedy and humour of the movie throughout. Anyone like myself who is old enough to have lived through 1971 will appreciate the sheer mastery at which the cast were able to recreate that particular era to utter perfection.

A Great film this. I've lent this to other friends and family members to watch and they loved it. It is very good - it would definitely be a great present for someone.

Great film! I come from Africa and now live abroad and whenever I get home sick or want to see Africa how I remember it, I watch this film.

Once in a while a film comes along that has the power to change your mind about certain pre-conceived ideas. This is one such film. City of Joy never shys away from the power of its message and its graphic picture of life in a poor part of a large and spralling Indian city. Yes, at times it can be a little hard to swallow - the big American doctor (Patrick Swayze) waltzing onto the scene - but its not over sickly sweet and you come away feeling that you have been taught a valuable lesson. That life is for living, not for spectating and you must live each moment and treasure each experience; savour it. You never know when it can be taken from you.

An incomplete and inconsistant story ponderously played out.
Tim Robbins is excellent for sure but the script doesn't do him justice and the last 15 minutes of the film in particular is going nowhere.
As a fan of films of the futuristic genre (Gattaca and the The Island for example) some aspects of the story line were interesting but not enough to redeem this film. The empathy virus seems to have made the Robbins character lose the run of himself, sacrifcing his lovely wife and child for what could be seen as an incestuous (in the context of this film) and futureless relationship. A rental only for the curious and an avoid for the rest of us I think. Not a patch in entertainment value to the films mentioned above. Get these first if you ... Read More:
