Now, it is true to say that the iconography of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones isn't one to be taken too seriously. Beginning life as a newspaper serial whose captions would later constitute a worldwide bestselling novel, Fielding at once captured the humility, the optimism and every single wine stain of the modern day middle-class working girl in England, with barbed asides regarding celebrity culture and the dating game that bordered on the scabrous but that were also never less-than-funny. To turn the novel into a charming romantic comedy blockbuster proved to be a bit of a no-brainer for Working Title and Miramax, and thanks to a marketing push that enveloped the world much like Miss Jones's underpants did her tummy and waist, pubs became ... I bought this to keep my two boys aged 4 and 6 occupied one afternoon so I could get some work done but I ended up watching the whole thing with them and we all loved it. Its sweet, funny, easy to follow and isn't too long as many family films are, Dreamworks are always on the mark when it comes to their animated movies.

The story of Bridget Jones first began as a diary collumn in a newspaper, rose to success in book form (then it's sequel) and then finally hit the movies in 2001 with Briget played quite perfectly by the lovely Renee Zellwegger.
This modern take on Pride and Predjudice follows the female protagonist Briget Jones who decides to keep a diary of her life; unlike the Mary-Jane all too perfect characters in most stories and movies of today, Bridget is quite literally EVERY woman you've ever known.
Bridget is a 30-something urban singleton on the look for love - perhaps in the wrong places. She's an ever so slightly overweight (Zellwegger put on weight specifically for the movie) office worker who reads self-help books religiously, ... Read More:

Unfortunately, this is miles away from being as good as the books or the first film. They changed the plot so they could shoe-horn Hugh Grant into the film (and a not very good fight scene with Colin Firth as well). But so much worse is the sense that Bridget has been made into a figure of fun, rather than someone who was funny because we related to her. Not funny, not romantic, even Colin Firth is less lovely in this film.

A big name cast hones their passing game in this funny romantic comedy based on the humble beginnings of professional football. (And by football I'm referring to the American game where you hardly ever get to hit the ball with your foot)
Renee Zellweger matches George Clooney scene for scene and zinger for zinger, and for the most part the best of the action is between these two instead of on the field. Defense and offense are handled nicely by John Krasinski, Jonathan Pryce and Stephen Root.
Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):
1. Tackles, passes, fumbles, fouls, interceptions and cheap shots abound in the movie, and some of them are even on the playing field.
2. Dodge Connelly (Clooney) doggedly and pugnaciously ... Read More:

I don't know how this movie was so unsufficiently advertised, but it is a great one. I watched it just after it came out, since I like Renee Zellwegger. It is a romantic comedy, of course, but it is not at all shallow, has surprises that no one expected and that still don't seem "too much", as they sometimes do, when the author is sooo trying to find a new twist. It is a joke on women, on men, and the whole game. Watch it.

If you take the equation of bigness of Cruise face on DVD cover as inversely proportional to the quality of the film you find it on, you should be able to avoid these seriously bad films. Yet again no awards for Toms own take on the acting profession that he tries and fails to be a part of. The story is sentimental trash, the writing is terrible and the car chases are virtually non-existant. This is another Cruise missile aimed directly at the soul of the viewers, way off target and fizzling out before ever being a serious threat. Avoid this tramp of a film.
