Talk about mixing a good-old-fashioned Western with modern-day lifestyles - here's a cowboy in 1880s Arizona with debt problems, mortgage arrears and who might lose his ranch as a result! Maybe the credit crunch isn't such news after all. But instead of repossession, in those days the lenders tended to set fire to your property, so hopefully we have progressed a little.
This is an attractively-shot movie with a really good musical score and a couple of A-listers in Bale and Crowe, all of which combines to make for good if sometimes rather violent visual and aural entertainment. It starts off reasonably enough, with financially-stressed Evans (Bale) agreeing to help put captured villian Wade (Crowe) on a train - that's the 3:10 to ... Read More:

Take an excellent story by an expert writer and you can guarantee that once in the hands of the film makers they will ruin it. This film is an abomination further ruined by an appalling sound track, poor acting and an excecrable screenplay. My advice is to avoid this film like the plague and buy the book!

This extended version is a lot denser that what I remembered of the 2000 commercial version. The politics of Rome are explored in a lot more detail, particularly that strange power the Roman Emperor had because of his own praetorian guard that was doing absolutely everything he ordered, and took orders only from the Emperor. At the end, when the Emperor is dead or nearly dead because he is defeated and disarmed, they refuse to obey their own officer. They will obey him only when the sister comes down and legitimizes Maximus. You only meet servile people and even the Senate and the Senators are just as servile out of fear for their welfare. That could be extended to today, even if today in our democratic countries this manipulation of people is less obvious, less ... Read More:

Good God! Russell Crow is one of my favorate actors, and I think this is his best film to date. With a superb supporting cast with the likes of Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed, and Richard Harris. This is a tail of one mans quest to find the man who wronged him. Betrayed by his own emperor, the general turned slave turned gladiator must take on an empire to bring justice to his life.

A Beautiful Mind's greatest achievement, in my humble opinion, is the way it makes schizophrenia accessible to "sane" people. The general public knows schizophrenics tend to talk to themselves, repeat certain actions and do things generally at odds with the norm. But why? It's nearly impossible for a "sane" individual to understand why this happens...and more importantly, what that feels like. Without this essential empathy, many people become frustrated with the mentally ill, asking why patients can't pull themselves together and just bear up. We express this same impatience with the criminally insane who act upon delusions with disastrous results. It is incomprehensible.
A Beautiful Mind does all it can to change that, and it succeeds. Unless you are familiar ... Read More:

Curtis Hanson has managed to direct a film which captures the late 1940's in both style and spirit. Often films depicting the glamourous side of this era immerse themselves too much in the styles and fashions of the time, rendering the actual characters superfluous to the movie. Not here though - the characters drive the film, blending in perfectly with the directing style swaying effortlessly to capture the gritty and the classic-Hollywoodesque, the guy has done his homework.
Risks were taken by casting relatively unknown non-Americans in the two major roles, a rare thing by a Hollywood studio. It's hard to imagine anyone else but Russell Crowe as the fiery `Bud' and at times Guy Pierce seems a bit awkward as `Exley' - but this isn't a flaw in his acting, this is him ... Read More:

Hollywood at its very very best. The performances from Al Pacino especially & Russell Crowe were spellbinding. An intelligent & totally absorbing film.

Wacthing Master and Commander is like being transported back in time to the year 1805, as Britain and France fought for mastery of the Seas. It is one of the most realistic and atmospheric films I have seen in a long time, and part of the film's brilliance comes from Peter Weir's ability to create a detailed and believable world for the characters to occupy.
The film follows a cat and mouse chase between the Royal Navy Man-of-War, The HMS Surprise, and the French Privateer ship, The Acheron, as they stalk each off the coast of South America. At the Surprise's helm is Captain 'lucky' Jack Aubery, a veteran of the Battle of the Nile, and a brave and charismatic man who once served under Admiral Nelson. At his side is his best friend, the ship's doctor and physician, Dr. Stephen ... Read More:
