Loved the first 2 series - definitely 5 stars each. This third series was a big disappointment. The new village copper was a bore and the main love story was not developed but merely dropped into the land of cliche.
Will have great difficulty in making another series believable

With a bit of luck, they would have, without ruining things.
Series 1. Well nigh perfect. Eccentric supporting characters usually have me reaching for the shotgun, but here they are quite over the top, generally annoying, and just all round brilliant.
Even the Receptionist character change in Series 2 was carried off well. How many other series could manage that? Katherine Parkinson should have had an impossible task in taking Lucy Punch's part, after she had done an Alan Rickman, yet she managed it without any seeming effort - just complementing the role, if anything, while ruling, like she always does.
The Christmas 2006 Special was very strange indeed. You'd think after two series, everyone was settled ... Read More:

This was absolutely brilliant. It left me wanting a sequel! The acting was excellent. Victoria Wood was outstanding as Nella Last, the housewife who was suffering from a mild depression at the beginning of the film. Her writing of the mass observation diary was a kind of therapy for her and she became a stronger person when she joined the WVS in spite of her controlling and unimaginative husband (and his brisk, efficient sister, who despised Nella and had no patience with her depression) and became a dependable member of the organisation, earning the respect and friendship of even some snobbish women who found Nella beneath them at first.
Did Nella understand when one of her sons tried to tell her he was gay? I am not sure.....nor did ... Read More:

This is a very well-written and well-acted series, set around the story of a group of British, Australian, Dutch and Eurasian women in a Japanese POW camp during World War II. The characters are complex and have considerable depth: the plots that develop are true to the characters involved in them. We see their doubts and their failings and some of the reasons behind their more unpleasant actions: as a result, you find yourself sympathising with individuals who would normally only arouse your judgement. Not all the Japanese are brutes; not all the prisoners are saints.
The series also scores highly in the accuracy stakes. Somebody did a lot of research: not only is the broad thrust accurate (the impoverished circumstances of the shipwrecked ... Read More:

Some of the new comedy writers should watch this and learn. It deals with Sex, Drugs, Alcohol and human emotions - without a single swear word and whilst bringing the viewers to tears of laughter.

My enjoyment of this DVD was spoiled by the poor setup of the DVD features. When some episodes are selected, they do not start at the beginning, and at the end they restart (again not at the begining) rather than return to the menu. I have a number of other BBC DVDs, and this is the first one with this problem.

Grow old gracefully? Not these two. Tom and Diana stil prove that growing old Disgracefully is far more fun. Diana along with her trusty sidekick Tom are still able to defeat any con job that 'The Idiot Bains' tries to pull on the residents of the Bayview Retirement home.
