i hadn't seen Fat Friends when it came out on tv, but do remember friends raving about it, i finally watched a DVD and wow, i was totally hooked after the first episode, it really got to the nitty gritty, as we slowly got to know all the personalities, with one thing in common, a weight problem, i don't know what i was expecting, but this wasn't it, it was far better than i could have imagined, and now have the complete box set of all three series, it had me both laughing and almost crying in parts, but the better part was how they all supported each other come what may, a beautiful storyline. well worth every penny.

Much as I like Gillian Kearney, she fails to convince in the leading role. As a succession of tradegies befall her, she remains beaming and gleeful. She seems impervious to everything that is thrown at her. How then can the audience become concerned about her future.
The plot itself lacks any novel ideas. I found the entire production lacklustre, unconvincing and disappointing.
I would not recommend this DVD unless you have run out of alternatives. There are plenty of more interesting films in the Cookson series than this one.

I was really disappointed by this film. After reading the rave reviews elsewhere I thought it would be gripping, but found the characters like 'cardboard cutouts' rather than any great role development taking place. Was some footage cut somewhere? The only great acting came from Sean Bean (as the moody, troublesome brother who's always looking for a fight), but his part isn't that big, so if you're a Bean fan I would suggest buying a different Bean film.
