Doctor Who - Series 4 Vol.2 [2008]

starring: David Tennant, Freema Agyeman, Catherine Tate
directed by: Douglas MacKinnon, Alice Troughton, Graeme Harper

July 07, 2008
Series 4 of the new Doctor Who has been in my opinion, one of the finest series ever. David Tennant remains as brilliant as ever, and if anything changes, it's that he can only get better as time goes on. Catherine Tate, has surprised and amazed me, with her portrayal of Donna Noble in this series, making the character such a credible, efficient and lovable assistant to the Doctor.

All this excellence continues in this fine volume of the fourth series, as Russell T Davies revives another old villainous race from the Doctor's past, introduces more allies and facts from the Time Lord's past (the older series to be exact) and includes some more good old interaction with one of history's greatest figures.

The Idiot's Lantern is by far the worst Dr Who episode ever made. If I wanted to watch a house full of squabbling, cliched & over-sterotyped characters I would watch an episode of Neighbours. But I'm being too harsh on Neighbours - even at its worst, the characters in Neighbours have more depth and are more believable than those that bicker their way through The Idiot's Lantern. I suppose this was supposed to be some kind of social commentary - but setting up a strawmen like Eddie, just to kick him down, is a puerile way to make a point. This episode is a disgrace to the Dr Who series :( The Rise of the Cybermen and the Age of Steel are worth a watch if you like the Cybermen.

Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks [1985]
Although I felt that the story is good in places, there were a few faults. For example, you could completely see through the dalek voices and they didn't sound that convincing and the two fifty minute episodes were far too long. I was nearly asleep because fifty minutes is just far too long for a show which was normally twenty five minute episodes. Despite its faults, if you are a dalek fan it is still worth getting as you see plenty of the daleks and Davros.

Having enjoyed all of The Third Doctor's stories so far I found myself underwhelmed and disappointed by this one. The return of the show's iconic alien nasties should be a cause for celebration, but like the story as a whole it just feels a bit flat and lifeless. The first episode is unusual in that it follows on directly from the previous story - Frontier in Space. The Doctor and Joe flee The Ogrons' home world after The Master brings them there whilst attempting to manufacture a space war between Earth and Draconia. The Doctor is shot by an Ogron, and falls into a deep coma, after staggering into the TARDIS and taking off. The time machine arrives on the planet Spiridon and Jo sets out to explore, recording everything she sees on a cassette recorder and leaving The Doctor ... Read More:

I've just started watching all the episodes again with my nine year old son who finds them absolutely hilarious! In one particular episode, Briggs & Louis had a side bet of £10 and it was comedy genius watching the two of them - I would dearly love to see another series commissioned by the beeb.

starring: Ashley Gunstock, Ralph Brown, Ronnie Cush, Vikki Gee-Dare, Kevin Lloyd
directed by: Graeme Harper, Jim O'Hanlon, David Holroyd, Derek Lister, David Yates (II)

October 09, 2000
PC Eddie Santini was one of the most enigmatic thief-takers ever to appear on "The Bill", along with such notables as DS John Bolton and DS Don Beech. This is the highly dramatic conclusion to this character's role on "The Bill" as well as to a singular and remarkable storyline which developed over the course of two years. "Old Flame" which is the first episode to appear on this tape reunites Santini with DS Rosie Fox whom he first admired, later almost stalked and finally victimised along with most of Sun Hill. She is out for revenge and alone suspects his deeper involvement in a mysterious arson. Eddie must not only deal with the criminals with which he has inadvertantly involved himself but also with Fox. Everything gets out of control and in a dramatic conclusion ... Read More:

Doctor Who - The Caves Of Androzani [1984]

starring: Peter Davison
directed by: Graeme Harper

February 13, 1995
The Caves of Androzani was the story that killed Dr Who. I don't mean the character - I mean the TV series. What the production team achieved on this story - especially given what had preceded it that season - was extraordinary. Here was a production that was accomplished and polished, that was witty and dark, that was played with conviction. The design was good, hte lighting (for a change) was moody and fitting. Its being a regeneration story served only to draw attention to its strengths. It isn't difficult to see that the production team spent Davison's last season, especially this story, on trying to build on the show's success in the 60s and 70s.
It was obvious that after the demise of Tom Baker's Doctor the show was becoming perceived as rather old, and a bit tired, and the show wouldn't ... Read More:
