I only watched this recenty and I really loved this film.....just captures the progression and danger of surfing at the highest level. I am not a surfer and I don't think you really have to be into it to appreciate this film at all...it's shot nicely and the documentary style with interviews makes it flow nicely.

Billabong Odyssey

Billabong Odyssey is one of the best, most brilliantly filmed big wave moview of all time. Not only is it genuinely tense and at some points (the end scene big wave surf contest is nail biting!!) it also deals with the future evolution of tow in surfing. The wave riding performances are astounding.

The only problem with this film, is the second DVD, which contains average shortboarding footage at low resolution.

BUY IT for the big wave scenes made via helicopter.

This DVD is excellent it shows really helpful surfing techniques for all levels of ability. The sections are very clearly explained and cover each step in a way that you can relate to. The photography is good also and combined with the instructional aspects creates a DVD that's well worth looking at before you go surfing!
Having watched "Learn To Surf" by Andy Irons - don't bother that is only 28 minutes long and mostly a PR show case! - not worth it.
By 110% Surfing Techniques instead.

I do not surf, I never have surfed and probably never will BUT, I was entranced by this film when I first saw it in the cinema many years ago. The way the images and the music - Echoes by Pink Floyd from 'Meddle' - are melded together have a magical feel. If you like the sea and like the music of Pink Floyd then this is a must buy recording.
