MORSE was, in my opinion, quite simply the best British drama series ever. All 33 episodes for under a hundred quid ... no debate. This is a must buy series. Unquestionable quality from start to finish.

John Thaw had to be persuaded to take on the role for which he is best remembered. Having already played Detective Regan in the classic seventies series, The Sweeney, Thaw was reluctant to take on the role of another Police Officer. Thaw was persuaded that Morse would be a very different kind of character to Regan, one more likely to his intellect to solve a problem than his fists. This character was an intellectual former Oxford student, with a love of classical music, beer, The Archers and solving a puzzle. He also knew he was intellectualy superior to his colleagues and was prone to treating people in a partrosining manner, most notably his long suffering Sergeant, Robbie Lewis. Jack Regan would have run a mile from such a character.

May I begin with a plea to Amazon? Please can we have lists of episodes for TV box sets and other multi-item products? It would be a huge help in knowing what you are getting as a customer. The "series" element in Morse can be a bit confusing, as in this case where "series 4" consists solely of one story, "Masonic Mysteries".
I am speaking as someone who has already bought the episode in question as part of a 2-disc set including "second time around", which was probably a better buy in the long run i.e. two episodes for about the same money.
However, Masonic Mysteries itself is an exciting instalment, with an entertaining if slightly surreal plot. My own favourite moment is when Supt Strange is faced with the fact that a virus ... Read More:

I really enjoy this show and this was a great season of it. It contained enough of twists and turns and surprises to keep me happy and satisfied with it and I think most people will enjoy it too, if you like this sort of thing.
I will review each episode on the dvd:
Dead On Time=This episode contains the apparent suicide of an elderly Don, who had recently become physically disabled, but when it became established that the man would not have been able to lift up the gun and pull the trigger, because of his dissability, Morse is called in to investigate the case, but there is a surprise in store for Morse because the dead mans wife turns out to be Morses ex fiance. This episode would be one of my favouites because, although it isn't too complicated, ... Read More:

Sadly, the eighth season of Morse proved to be the final season for one of the most popular detectives of all time in the history of Broadcasting.
There are five episodes in this series, and they are all very good indeed.
The Way Through The Woods is one of my favourites. Morse becomes involved in a case against the wishes of his Superintendent Strange (James Grout, I could never understand why Morse allowed Grout to constantly address him as "Matey") A prisoner is killed by another prisoner, but before dying he admits to 4 murders, but not the 5th. This sets Morse and Lewis off onto a trail of twists and turns which eventually strains their relationship on more than one occasion when Lewis fails to agree with Morse about a missing girl whose ...
