Well, I've no bones with the packaging, so no loss of stars for that. This deserves all five.

I am not a devotee of anime by any means, most of it that I've seen is purile and annoying. However, there are some real gems out there and this is one them and while not suitable for very young children, it will have a very broad appeal. This is not a cheesy romance, not a sci-fi fest, not a violent supernatural bloodfest, not a swords and sorcery fantasy epic, nor is there any macho brutality, nor any barely clad females. This is what we used to call fantasy before Dungeons & Dragons came along!

This is a beautifully realised world, the societies and their costumes remind me of the Autrian-Hungarian empire, the floating ... Read More:

There has been many great anime series over the last few years, 'Cowboy Bebop', 'Rahxephon', 'Evangelion' to name but a few but personally for me 'Last Exile' towers head and shoulders above all of them. One of the elements that I love about this series is the wealth of beautifully realised characters and their relationships, and the fact that they are all so likeable and interesting, you actually begin to care what happenes to them, a tricky thing to do for animated characters! But that isn't all, the 'steampunk' setting is completely original and the epic story is brilliantly realised and full of action, almost every episode is filled with spectacular airship battles, dogfights and chases, and the animation is flawless combining traditional hand ...
