I enjoyed Evangelion alot, and in general found the last episodes quite confusing so this helped me get the idea better.
This is how it should have been done originally.

Ever since I started watching anime (which has not been all that long), I have been curious about some of the big series. Like the nearly infinite number of Gundam's, the Lodoss series, and, of course, Evangelion. The latter has such universal popularity that I finally decided to try it. Put off by the price of the episodes I was attracted to this DVD, because of its two features, 'Death' was a recap of the series, and 'Rebirth' would provide some insight into its ending and meaning.
As usual, I was being optimistic. My first viewing of 'Death' left me feeling that I had just experienced one of those shorts that were titled '26,000 Years of Art in 60 Seconds.' It does indeed recap the high points of the series, but as a crazed rollercoaster ... Read More:

This volume sadly only contains 4 episodes, one down from the previous two. Do I detect a bit of a money-grab from ADV? Well, onto the actual contents.
Most of the episodes contained live up to the remarlable standards set by earlier episodes of Evangelion. For me, only Serial Experiments Lain comes close to the substance of this series. In this volume, it becomes plainer than ever that Eva is so much more than an ordinary mecha show. Misato and Ritsuko finally get some substantial backstory and, as far as I remember, in all of the episodes, there are some of the nice little character-driven moments which make Eva so enjoyable.
Episode 11 - The Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still - was really for the action-fans. Without giving away anything, we also get ... Read More:

After a very positive review I rented the first 4 episodes. Although the animation was good, it wasn't great. The story line was very week and jumped along leaving me feeling that I had missed bits. You got no real feeling for the characters as the dialog was poor with little feeling behind the voice over, may have lost alot in translation.
But for manga fans it is probably a good film, I’ve seen worse. But if your new to manga then this may disappoint compared to other film genres.
For a manga film I would rate it 4/5
But as an film in general quite poor 3/5 looks good and has potential but I won’t be renting the rest of the serise unless there is nothing else to watch.

I recently wrote a review for the Ralph Ellison novel `Invisible Man' and started it by saying that I was unsure of what to write. Well, it's the same with Neon Genesis Evangelion. What can I say that hasn't already been said about this masterpiece of a show? Frankly, I don't think there is anything new to say, so, basically what I'll do is just repeat it all but change the phrasing. That should work.
It's an anime about mecha and the young teenagers that have to use them to save the world from these `aliens' (I think, but have no idea because it is all far too complicated) who have been dubbed Angels. They have to deal with the psychological stresses of such a confounding responsibility, as well as the everyday interactions and social expectations that afflict ... Read More:

These three episodes (21 thru 23) are the lead in to the end. Even as SEELE's plans approach fruition both Rei and Asuka are subjected to bruising attacks. New themes are introduced, some questions are answered, and we begin to understand that Gendo Ikari's agenda is to be a god maker - the herald of a new existence.
1) The Birth of NERV
In the aftermath of Unit 1's actions SEELE begins an intensive investigation into Gendo Ikari's actions. This culminates in suspicion turning on Ryoji Kyogi. Misato's heartbreak is played against the story of the beginning of Gehirn, the project that was to become NERV. For the first time we learn of Shinji and Rei's beginnings. In addition, we learn what Rei has always known - the EVA's are far more than dolls.
