'Texhnolyze', from the creators of 'Serial Experiments: Lain' just keeps evolving. After the claustrophobic and anguished world in which we entered the Texhnolyze universe ( Vol 1 ), Volumes 3-5 really expand the story to reveal a multitude of differing but intrinsically linked power struggles. Cyberpunk and dystopic elements prevail and the web of struggles and deceit entangles with greater sociological and political undercurrents.

Like 'Serial Experiments: Lain' the whole picture is not revealed until the end. Persevere, concentrate and relish the details.

A box set of the complete series would be nice.

Texhnolyze - Vol. 1

Childrens Toy Shop > DVD > Texhnolyze
starring: Akira Haga, Shizuka Itou, Hiroshi Tsuchida
directed by: Hiroshi Hamasaki

June 13, 2005
The plus side of this series is that it is technically superb and visually stunning.
The minus is that it is unremittingly bleak, with a chaotic plot and deeply unsympathetic characters.
In the very first episode the main character is deliberately mutilated. Then it gets worse (yes, for real).
It's not gore for the sake of gore, but the relentless pessimism just never lets up. A prophetic character becomes all but catatonic because of the horror she foresees. By the end of the series you see her point.
Makes "End of Evangelion" look positively cheerful.
