Here we go again. It's the whole dvd situation again. You buy a film in good faith, only for them to replace it a few months later. It's pathetic that this film doesn't have either of the high def sound formats DTS MA or DD True HD. It's the reason I tend to rent Blu-Ray discs rather than buy at the moment. Great film though. 4 stars is for the film, 3 stars for the disc itself.

finaly got round to watching this dvd and i never thought i'd say this about a bond film but it was pants it seemed to me they were trying to pretend the past 30 odd years of bond never happened with things like bond had only just been given 00 status i know this was the first book written but if they wanted to start a the begining it should have been set in the 1950's it just didn't jel no moneypenny no q it just wasn't bond

I've loved all the Bond movies, ever since Dr No.

Yes, some are better than others. Some Bonds are *certainly* better than others. But they're all the the same action-packed, no-brain-required, formulaic-but-fun glorious mess of boys' toys (explained by a grumpy 'Q' - 'DO try to pay attention, 007...'), glamor girls, explosions, wacky bad-guys and political incorrectness. Yep, this is the good stuff we've come to expect from a Bond Movie.

And then they made Casino Royale...

I'm sure a lot of people will love to see Bond reinvented like this, but if you're an old time fan like me, you won't. All the traditional elements are gone. It's all become deadly serious, to the point where it verges ... Read More:

Appropriately enough the first of the series to have a really imaginative use of colour, Goldfinger is in many ways the most visually sensual of the films, the unforgettable image of Shirley Eaton's golden girl reflected in a golden glow to much of Ted Moore's cinematography. It's oozing with striking and surreal imagery, from Oddjob's menacing shadow on the hotel room wall, to the little old lady with machine gun or Bond making his entry by unzipping his wetsuit to reveal an evening one underneath. Ken Adam's production design is his possibly his finest hour, genuine architecture of the imagination that is at once both fantastic and strangely credible, maintaining a sense of scale and verisimilitude by his use of ceilings on the smaller sets.

Collecting the six `official' movies featuring Bond number one, Sean Connery:

Dr No: James Bond's cinematic debut is an exotic mystery with a few classic moments along the way; Sean Connery's introduction and the shot of Ursula Andress walking out of the sea have passed into cinematic legend, whilst the film itself is an involving adventure, and a close adaptation of the original novel. Joseph Wiseman's Dr No is a fine villain, and Jack Lord's Felix Leiter was never bettered either.

From Russia With Love: Simply put, the finest of the Bond series; this movie provided the benchmark by which all future Bond films would be judged. A well-plotted cold war thriller, it features career-best performances from Connery and Pedro Armendariz, and a chilling ... Read More:

For many Bond fans, the return of Sean Connery in this "unofficial" Bond entry, was an exciting opportunity to experience the Connery magic and charisma before the earlier pre-Roger Moore years. Released in 1983, the film competed head-to-head against Moore's entry, "Octopussy" which, to some critics of note, one of the better Roger Moore efforts. Obviously, this production had a more engaging cast, an entertaining story, and some good actors: Maude Adams and Lois Jourdan as Bond's nemesis than "Never Say Never Again."

While it's good to have Connery back, looking actually fitter than he did in "Diamond Are Forever" in 1971, and wearing a faultless toupee, the film manages to fall short on a number of levels. Viewers should note, it is a different film; for instance, no gun barrel ... Read More:

My personal favourite of all the Bond movies, Timothy Dalton's debut in the role is an original, hard-edged cold war adventure film with interesting characters, a believable plot, some strong acting (Joe Don Baker takes the honours), and a truly awesome final stunt sequence. And Dalton, though he has his detractors, is easily the closest to Fleming's original literary Bond; he plays the part as a professional spy, and not a playboy. One of the most underrated thrillers of the 1980s. Top marks.

In recent years, George Lazenby's one and only movie in the role of Bond has come in for sympathetic critical re-evaluation, with it's fidelity to Fleming, charming performance from Diana Rigg, (comparitively) realistic action scenes, and twist ending. However, despite these plus points, the fact remains that On Her Majesty's Secret Service is an uninvolving, almost boring film. Lazenby isn't bad but he's so monumentally overshadowed by the spectre of Connery that he never has a chance of making the role his own; he lacks the emotional range to give his romantic scenes with Rigg any real charge, and you become aware as the film progresses that the whole thing is geared towards masking his shortcomings. Picture quality in some scenes from the first half of the movie appear very grainy. It's saying something when the Goldfinger print is better than a more recent Bond. Do they bother checking their products before they release them? Also, the film has been cropped at the sides, so that the computer screen readouts of the Goldeneye tracking system don't fit on the screen. The previous edition had none of these problems, so what went wrong?
