Some might describe these movies as what we used to laugh at. I must confess that I still do, and I always will laugh at these wonderful old British films.
Margaret Rutherford is the definitive Miss Marple in my opinion. Later productions (for TV) are watchable and enjoyable, and may be more true to Agatha Christie. Here however, is a compelling strength of character and a thick seam of comedy running right through four flawless performances. Somehow, I can watch them again and again, and still laugh at things like a theatrical gesture, or a piece of dryly comic dialogue.
Praise to Plymouth's own Ron Goodwin for composing that theme that always brings a smile to my face, because I know what is in store.

This a film where the story idea is actually far better than the film itself. People receiving voicemails from the future, replaying them meeting their demise, is a very scary scenario. And initially the film carries this off quite well, the first scenes featuring the spooky messages are very effective and provide some chilling moments.
But then the film descends into a corny formula of seen-it-all-before horror scenes that borrows heavily from Final Destination and The Ring, but done half as well. The obligatory spooky children (how tired is this storyline now) then make an appearance, we get a series of flashbacks and all kinds of ghouls cropping up at opportune moments. Some of the visuals in this film are quite scary but after a while they start ... Read More:

I knew this was an old film, and so did not expect a good conversion to HD - but I assuming I did not know the date, I would have thought this was new release
i read a review stating it a was digitally made so i reckon it is because of this - after all it is 11 years old

When Nat Cole's smooth, melancholy delivery sends "Rather Have the Blues Than What I've Got" out of Mike Hammer's car radio late one night, we know nothing good is going to happen. Hammer has just picked up a desperate young woman named Christina who had been running down an isolated California two-lane rode.
"The room is dark and gloomy, you don't know what you're doing to me
The way it has got me caught, I'd rather have the blues than what I've got."
The lyrics might not be good, but Cloris Leachman's frightened urgency as Christina sets the movie on the fast track. It's not long before Hammer's car is forced off the road, he's beaten senseless, and wakes up on a bed listening to shrieks of pain as Christina, hanging from her wrists, is tortured to death in a vain ... Remember those dreams where you were being chased by a dark baddie monster and as you tried to escape everything seemed to go in slow motion - like running through treacle? Remember how scared you were.
Remember those black and white surrealist films by Jean Cocteau or Luis Bunuel that depict the human psyche so well - that plays with light and dark and are masterpieces of psycho-chiaroscuro.
Remember how few movies could create a bestselling poster out of any single movie frame, for instance Yellow Submarine.
Watch this film NOW and you will remember its genius for a life time. You will never tire of watching it again and again. It touches something deep inside us all.

Hollywood at its very very best. The performances from Al Pacino especially & Russell Crowe were spellbinding. An intelligent & totally absorbing film.

Zelda from terrorhawks does her best to try and scare the viewer in this terrible film. Same trick as 'Sickth Sense' and 'Dead Mans Shoes', whereby someone you were watching that you thought was real turns out to be a ghost all along. Cheap tricks like this don't make for an enjoyable film, especially as there is no such thing as ghosts. Why do people keep making ghost films when there is absolutely positively no proof for their existence except the anecdotal sort from half wits, drunks and the elderly? The house is nice where it was filmed though, and good on Nicole for shunting Cruisey baby.

I could rave for hours about this film, but suffice to say it's the perfect thriller, the template for countless other films and everyone should have it. This edition (the Warner from 2006) is a simply stunning transfer with that true Technicolor feel and all for a fiver. Incredible.
