Whilst playback of AVI files encoded with either DivX or XviD is pretty good, as is DVD-Video, there is an issue with the TV type output (PAL/NTSC/Multi).
As I have both PAL and NTSC DVD's, and AVI files, I set my players to Multi rather than PAL or NTSC. What this should do is send a signal to a compatible TV to change the refresh rate and line count - 625-line/50 Hz for PAL, 525-line/60 Hz for NTSC. However, if you play a PAL DVD/AVI file and then play an NTSC DVD/AVI file the output remains as PAL, which gives jerky playback. To correct this you have to go into the set up options and manually change it to NTSC. If you then change this back to Multi and put in a PAL DVD/AVI the output remains as NTSC, again producing jerky playback. ... Read More:

Out of the box, if you have recently installed wiring or new safety adapters, you can't plug this in. It does not come with a fitted three pin plug, but with a continental two pin plug, and the adapter supplied does not even have a dummy earth pin - you will need to buy a continental adapter.
Second, The progressive scan will only activate when used with the digital coaxial cable output, so if your TV doesn't have the relevant input, this feature is useless. After being used to the progressive scan and upscaling to HD of the XBox, I found the picture through scart or analog cable to be extremely poor with heavy ghosting - even the menus were hard to read. If you connect using the HDMI output, the progressive scan feature is deactivated.

ok so heres the major problem with the "Philips DVP5100 DVD Player"...
It's crap! It knows nothing when it comes to inserting or ejecting DVD's. When you try and eject the disc, you have about a 90% chance of the disc becoming lodged, and stuck on the rim of the DVD disc slot.
Two solutions to this that ive found
1. Prise the opening with your hands so the disc dont get stuck
or
2. Shove a blunt object in to get the disc out
If you do not do this quick enough, the dvd player will get confused and it wont have a clue if the disc is in or out. It will not let you put another disc in until you turn off the dvd player, and turn it on again.
The DVDR5520H is the cheaper sibling of the DVDR5570H, the only difference being a smaller HDD capacity.
Unfortunately this also means the DVDR5520H suffers from all the instability, clunkiness and bugs - everything from crashes/freeze ups during DVD playing to the random non-download of the TV Guide - that currently plague the DVDR5570H, even with the latest firmware (3.07) from Philips.
It appears this product has been rushed to market. Don't pay to be a beta tester - let Philips sort out the problems first. Their Cineos and Aurea TVs prove there's a good company in there somewhere; the DVD5520H doesn't.
