I used this machine for recording interviews as part of my social science studies and, although considerably cheaper when I bought mine, it is a good basic tape recorder with good sound quality and an excellent range. I don't see any point spending more money if this is the kind of thing you are going to use it for.

I am a singer/songwriter and when I record tunes on the piano, it helps me memorise some melodies I created and I can always erase something if I don't like it. Worth the buy. Sony is a good brand!

Having read many reviews before purchasing this microphone I have to say that the previous comments are totally accurate. I wanted a mike that I could use with my PC to dub over videos that I edit prior to burning to disc. Previous mikes have allowed the hum of the PC hard drive to be detected and this has been eradicated with the mike. Setting the control to 90deg allows me to have total control over the input with no outside nosie interference. I have also used this mike in a church wedding via my Camcorder where previously the dialog of a church service has been difficult due to high ceilings and lots of echo. Using a 10m extension cable with no loss of qaulity I am highly delighted with the results. I aslo think the price is excellent.

It's cheap and 10 times cheaper than a decent MP3 recorder (like a zoom multitrack) so it's worth getting for recording music lessons and quick demos of ideas and most people still have a tape player so you can play your ideas back to them. But it's a quite hissy and tinny. Even listening through headphones there's not much base response. It's very plasticky and doesn't feel like it'll put up with loads of knocks. However, for around £25 inc postage, you'll not be too bothered if it gets lost or damaged, not like if you've just forked out £200 on an MP3 recorder!
I'll have to see if it lasts now as it'll be living in my guitar bag from now on and I may try it with another mic

Every thing you expect from Sony.
I am sure I will use this for at least five years.

Two days later.....
Sory to say this about sound. Very poor sound, two three meters away cant hear and now I will keep this for about five months.

I bought the 1gb machine, which matches on all features bar the storage capacity, as the above reviewer it's simple to use and pretty to look at, but the recording leaves much to be desired. If you are recording at close range the Sony does a great job, but with distance the recorded volume falls of hugely and is over shadowed with an annoying background hiss. This makes it too difficult, if not nearly imppossible, to hear through the in-built speaker or supplied headphones. The only way that I could make sense of things was to use a set of headphones with a volume control and the Sony's microphone sensitivty set to maximum. Clarity of recording is excellent, this syncs with Media Player easily and can be used as a MP3 player too. It records at a default high sampling rate of 128kbps, I don't think that many sound cards can play this level of fidelity, so it will be your computer which will be the weak link in sound quality. It also has a neat feature which enables recharging of the battery (you need to get a rechargable battery yourself) when plugged into the USB dongle provided.

Given this is effectively an MP3 player (headphones are included) as well as a voice recorder, this is a good value bit of kit. There are several functions in the menu, which I have not bothered fiddling with. As it comes out of the box, its exactly what I need.
