CanoScan 4400F Scan with Quality & Versatility
In one word, this product is "superb".
I was given a slide / negative converter for my birthday. This item was a lightbox, being a tall box, with a negative / slide holder. The results were awful, with totally burnt out slides and poor quality negatve prints. It was cumbersome to use and not at all user friendly. Luckily, we persuaded the supplier to give a refund.
The Canon 4400F, in contrast, gives amazing results, with accurate exposures and colours. It is easy to use and I can fnd no faults with it. The only downside is a bulky unit, which if you have a scanner already, does take up extra space on your work surface. However, this is a small price to pay, and I unplug ... Read More:

Routine scanning of pictures and documents is fast, accurate and of high quality on the default settings. I am very satisfied with the digitisation of colour positive slides and the bundled software is a real bonus. Overall great value for money.

I've bought this scanner and had a good play about with the different option. It was a little confusing at first as the scanner appears to save the picture as a negative. When you finally save the scan, it does all the background work. The guide was vague about how it was going to work.
The only critisism I can have is that it can't cope with APS films. The scan trays only work for 35mm and Slides. The APS films (which were popular before digital became cheap enough) are a slightly slimmer film.
I did manage a work-around which involved a fiddly system, but the quality of the scans was average to poor. I've written off to the manufacturers in the hope they may have a solution!

I have just received my scanner via Amazon and I have been able to produce some very good quality slides after some problems, which I have not yet solved, with the installation of the software. The Plustek software goes in easily and the Lasersoft appeared to do also but when I start mt computer it tells me each time that this is not installed. I find however that it is there somewhere. I discovered that if I tried to import a scan into paint Shop Pro 12 the TWAIN driver was there and I ws able to use it to produce good quality images. I am sure that when I get the software sorted I will have a very useful piece of kit.

Wonderful piece of kit, scans film & slides very well indeed, you just need to read instuctions first, though I found it quite user friendly, I had it scanning slides within 30 min after getting it out of the box.
Auto film loader is spot on, a key feature, it does require the film to be undamaged, no kinks or damaged edges and fed in with care.
Sure its a bit on the slow side but the quality of result is very good indeed, software allows for all sorts of repair and enhancement.
It was able to scan repair/restore forty year old film a treat.
A bargain for the casual film/photo scanner who cannot justify the high cost of a dedicated 35mm film scanner.
And of course its a brilliant flat bed scanner when you've finished with film.

I was secptical about buying this scanner after reading a few reviews. But as it was the cheapest I gave it a go. But I think I got more for my money and was really pleasently surprised when I started using it. It is a compact unit which doesnt take up much space. Works exactly as it says on the box, although you do need to read the manual to get the best results. The scanning glass and lights also need to be cleaned (cleaning brush included) quite often, but I think that may be more due my negatives. The included software is adequate if you just want to transfer the pictures, but can get free software from the web if you want to really transform the pictures. Another plus is that it draws the power from the USB port and therefore doesnt have an external power adapter. This scanner ... Read More:

Using with a Mac PC running OSX 10.5.2 I found this to be excellent and far in front of others at the price. I have now scanned some 1,000 slides using the simple preview method at 600 DPI and am fully satisfied.
A special few of my slides had been transferred from the old 2 1/4" square transparencies taken in 1948 and were in very bad condition. The Plustek and software dealt with all the rough stuff and a tweak with Photoshop and they were amazing.
I damaged the install disc and received a new one from Germany in 3 days free of charge. So excellent after sales too.

Well a question not a comment. How do you think this would work on small (old) photos, small negs etc.? I am fed up buying things said to do what I need them to do, only to find that they don't! I have photos from 1940's that are no way standard and something like this might just do the trick, even if it wasn't exactly designed for it.
