i just got this recorder and find it superb. the device is tiny, light and "dupont lighter"-stylish. i particularly like the metal buttons, much more tactile that plastic one - i know it is a small thing. I like the five-line display which provides a lot of information compared to another device i used.
now for the great part, the integrated micros are great, and the stereo effect is really a bonus. This is especially the case if you later listen with earphones.
the time elapsed versus the length of the file are displayed clearly and legibly.
i did invest in a little carry case and i am glad i did because that way i can throw the recorder into a bag and still keep it pristine.
i find the 'hold' button more positive ... Read More:

This is one of the best digital recorders that you can buy for less than £50. Does exactly what it promises! The software is simple and runs smooth on a XP platform.

Appears fine at first, but the controls have a very annoying fault - fast forwarding or rewinding is done with the same buttons that jump to another file either forward or backward, and it's very easy to accidentally jump to the end of a recording - very irritating when you're 20 minutes in to a 90 minute interview. I agree with the other comments re: Digital Wave Player - it's a pain, and life would be far simpler if the recorder could be plugged into any PC and seen as an external hard drive from which to drag and drop audio files.
Worse still, my VN-2100PC has now packed up altogether. It won't transfer files via DWP without an error message popping up halfway through the process, and it dies without warning even on fresh batteries. ... Read More:

I am very pleased with this digital recorder, which I am using for recording one to one interviews for my Masters degree dissertation. I have not needed an additional microphone and have found the recordings to be very good quality, even when recorded outside with building works going on in the background.
It is Mac compatible - I have used this feature to 'back-up' the recordings onto my Mac for peace of mind. I have not tried playing them back through my laptop but understand that Macs will need extra WMA software to do this.
A really small, neat easy to use, good quality product at a good price.
Excellent little device and very easy to use. The insructions are well written and within a few hours of use you can pretty much understand all of the basic recording functions and have the device connected to a computer to download your first files.
I'm using the recorder to keep a record of rehearsals with a variety of bands from guitar duo to a full 5 piece. The quality is always good with almost no messing around. It doesn't seem possible to make a bad recording.
Recording your rehearsals and performances is the best way to appraise your progress as a muscian. Don't delay and buy one today!

I bought this as a study help - I'm doing a Medical Administration course and use the VN2100 for medical terminology.
Love:
Its handy size, clear and easy to use, storage space, 5 folder divisions, add-on mic.
This arrived I unpacked it, read the instructions (Yes every one of them worth the short time it took),I loaded the CD, installed the software, plugged in the usb, took the cover off the needle and there you go burnt my first 12" disc to the hard drive. So easy, yes there was more work to be done on cleaning up the track but found that quite easy once I had played with the second set of software supplied. Maybe not for a budding DJ but for a normal person wanting to save time and money finding & buying digital replacements of their record collection then this is worth it. Just 2 points to consider you may not find music bought when a teen stands the test of a forty something ear's and If your using a laptop depending on your speeakers the music ... Read More:

I just took a job that requires me to record lectures, presentations and one-on-one interviews. My old Sony cassette recorder quickly proved inconvenient for the purpose - if only in trying to keep up with its endless demand for batteries and blank tapes. Reviews of this recorder inspired me to give it a chance.
I fully expected the sound quality to be better than the cassette recorder, which added hiss both during recording AND playback. But the sound quality is better than I had hoped for. Last night I recorded a lecture where the speaker did not use a microphone and I had no hope of getting near the front of the room. I set the recorder on my knee and hoped that would be enough. The result is a recording that, while not perfect, leaves ... Read More:

Amazon had an excellent price on this (the 512mb model costs more in some places). I used it for a conference, recording 28 talks in 2 days. The battery gave up on talk 29 but as meatloaf never said 28/29 ain't bad. I was sitting three rows from the front and used the built in mic to record in stereo HQ. Overall the recordings were pretty good, the major determining factor for quality was the diction of the speakers. Some had loud clear voices that made for great recordings whereas others mumbled and background noise became intrusive. An external mike would increase the quality of the recordings. Overall, very satisfied but the instructions that came with the recorder were laughable. You can download a full manual in English from the US Olympus site, but I ... Read More:
The only negative thing about this product is that using the menu with the finicky buttons needs a bit of practice. Saying that once you have the hand of this the sound recording quality is amazing for its size. It is incredibly sensitive and has the bonus of four track recording and being very portable it is so convenient. It takes two AA batteries which last quite a while and again is convenient. We use these in university and I don't own one yet being a student I keep waiting for them to go down in price - no such luck yet - wish list I think.
