My previous DVD player was a £10 job from Richer Sounds - it lasted three years, with exceptionally good sound and picture quality.
Now, I'm guessing that the Philips DVP3120 is designed for use with a modern type television ie a LCD telly. Unfortunately I am still using a CRT widescreen - and the results aren't fantastic. The picture is ok (ish), but not what I'd've expected, same with the sound.
All in all, I'm pleased with the build quality of the unit, also the remote is light and easy to use.
As noted by a reviewer below - this DVD player doesn't remember where the DVD was if you switch it off. Fine if you're watching a 24 minute episode of a series, not so great if you're working your ... Read More:

This product is easy worth twice what I paid, it is well made and big enough to take all the bits and bobs you need + room for the DVDs
cons It looks a little cheap, but for the price you will not regret getting one

EXCELLENT PICTURE...THAT IS if you are willing to shut your eyes towards the edges of the tv screen on both sides! which are..not sure which word to use...but i would say, totally blurred, as if it is a LENS effect!! that is the word..yes, all dvds i have tried, all regions..no hope. not my tv, occurs with HDMI cables which i use. the centre of the screen is just great picture, but what is the use for someone crazy about qualtiy!!!! save money for a bluray.
i bought it for its 1. multi region ability,(needs to enter code) 2. ability to play from USB,(as long as it does not require external power as with bigger capacity usb storage drives) and 3. ability to play movies from data dvd discs directly. all function very well!
HDMI upscaling??? ... Read More:

I noticed that other reviews direct the reader toward the product specs page for the multi region code. I may be blind as a bat - goes with my age I'm sure - but I cannot see it anywhere! I've just managed to locate this item elsewhere for the grand sum of £115, now all I need is that code.
Can anyone point me in that direction or list it here please?

Just a quick review to say I have owned an 870 for nearly a year now and I think it is very good.
High points are:
1. When recording shows with adverts to HDD it usually places chapter marks reliably at the beginning and of advert breaks. This means that if you want to burn the recording to DVD it is very easy and quick to get rid of the adverts using the A-B editing function before you burn the DVD.
2. The tuners are good, particularly the digital one. Having recently acquired a Freeview aerial and a Samsung LCD TV to go with the Sony, I have to say the Sony tuner is superior to the Samsung, good though the latter is. The quality of picture when pumped through the Sony to the TV is excellent. Obviously the results you will get will ... Read More:

I, like many, decided that the way to go was minimalist and the sales rep in Curry's where i first saw this unit, swore by it so i bought one here on Amazon, sooo much cheaper.
It arrived within 3 days which was great although i've only just set the thing up 3 weeks later :-)
Its a great looking unit and i especially like the sub with its gloss black face which matches my new Samsung plasma a treat ,BUT!!!!, alas, even though it was a doddle to set up(2 mins) the sound has to be very much desired. There is no where near enough bass and treble control and the sound is soo tinny.
I thought i'd stick saving private ryan on as the opening sound to that film is pretty spectactular.Great film now let down by uncontrolable sound. You literally could'nt hear the men ... Read More:

I've had this dvd/divx player for a while now and after reading some of the other reviews here decided my review was long overdue.
To answer some questions that have previously been asked:
*There is a fast-forward and rewind function on this player - the arrow buttons pointing left and right either side of the 'OK' button on the remote control work very well and there is a choice of 2x 4x 8x 16x and 32x (on my player anyway!)
*Slow motion playback is available by pressing the up or down buttons above and below the 'OK' button.
*Resume play is available - It will resume if you hit the play button briefly while the disc is loading (when the word "loading" appears on your screen) - the words "Resume Play" will appear on screen ... Read More:

For the money you can't complain; but the only negatives are:
1. when using Dvd +R or -R recordable discs the disc motor makes aloud noise but the problem is resolved if you use rewritable discs.
2. fast/forward can only be access using the remote.
All in all a nice piece of kit.
