I bought this machine a couple of months ago and although basically it works well the freeview recordings leave a lot to be desired, poor quality replay I have found, having had Sagem before I always had excellent playback, but this at times was difficult to watch, so I am discarding it and buying a sony.

Sony RDR-HXD890 160GB Hard Disc Drive DVD Recorder with freeview - Black
As a complete novice to the digital age, I found this machine to be incredibly straightforward and easy to use! The instruction book is clear and well written, and I am amazed at the number of actions which can be carried out simultaneously - e.g. recording one programme whilst watching another pre-recorded one, and being able to programme a future programme at the same time. I was so delighted that I persuaded a friend to buy one as well.

I bought the Panasonic DMR-EX78EB-K on Friday afternoon and received it by 08:30 the following morning - excellent service.
I've had it for two weeks now and when I opened the package I took the manual out and started reading it - a little confusing for someone who `doesn't do manuals' but I persevered, and then gave up, but for techies who like to have all this information it is a very comprehensive manual.
Following that, I installed the machine and like magic, it started finding and loading all the channels etc.
The machine was ready to go within a few minutes - very impressive.
I started recording onto the HDD within minutes of the installation and then played back what I recorded - the picture ... Read More:

Overall im pleased with it, had it a month now.
The picture quality is very good, even better with a HDMI cable (which i bought from ebuyer for £3!) and recording to a hard drive is excellent and quite simple to do. Theres a lot of good features such as vcr to dvd recording however there are a few niggles which annoy me:
The programe guide is incredibly frustrating. When you look through the channels it actually changes the channel in the background with it and when you turn the guide off, it changes back to the channel you were watching. You end up having to memorise the channel number you want to watch. In respose to another persons review, you can skip through days in the EPG by pressing the fast forward button.

I wanted to buy my first camcorder and found the DVR550 which had the features I needed at the right price. It looks right, is easy to use and comes with everything you need including an AV cable to connect the camcorder to your TV, earphones, carrying case and remote control. I have yet to try all its features out but I have used it to take pictures and recordings and it does the job well. So, in summary, for how much they're asking I can't find major fault with it.

The is a step up from the previous model, with a larger hard drive and the ability to add CD albums, whose titles can be fetched with Gracenote (so you don't have to type them in yourself).
It's an excellent recorder, but has some serious limitations. The first is that you can't back up the hard drive. You can put your entire music collection on here, but if the drive fails, you will lose everything. The usb connection is simply for adding mp3 tracks - you can't connect an external hard drive and record onto it.
The second also involves the music recording side. Whilst you can create your own "groups" of tracks from mp3 files, you can't from CDs. This means you cannot pick and choose which tracks from your CDs you want to record. It's the whole ... Read More:

So far, I've no complaints with the DVD/Video combo. It's pretty easy to use, and produces decent quality pictures on my 37" HDTV. It does take a painfully long time to change drive from video to DVD and vice-versa, but I can live with that, I guess.
Anyway, does anyone know a multi-region hack for the DVD?? Thanks.

This is an inexpensive VCR, almost certainly with a generic mechanism and electronics to be found in several brands. I have two, and they both present an excellent picture and adequate sound. I simply cannot understand why others have problems with it.
