Both my parents and I have bought this radio. A DAB radio, from Pure, for £50? Brilliant. And it was for the first 6 months. Slowly but surely the sound quality disappeared. It's like when the power cable is touching the ariel and the sound is a little bubbly, and odd. Hell, we listen to alot of Radio 5 Live, so we're used to Alan Green sounding a little distant... Right now, the radio can't even scan for stations. The same happened for my folks. It's a real shame, because it's an awesome radio, especially for the price. I'd keep your receipt if I were you. (it's worth pointing out that I have two other Pure DAB radios that have been, for the past 3 years, utterly excellent. It's just worth spending a little bit more on it)...

This is excellent value for money. As an amateur radio enthusiast I can recommend this receiver to anyone wishing to purchase their first wi-fi radio. Don't expect it to behave exactly like your domestic radio; as it is relatively slow to change from one station to another (partly dependent on your broadband speed). However even if you have only a passing interest in world radio this receiver will give you hours of fun; and of course there is recourse to hundreds of UK radio stations - ideal for those of us who wish to escape the bland output of the commercial multiplexes. Drawbacks for me include an over bright LED display which is liable to keep you awake at night if you have it on your bedside table. It has also 'crashed' on a couple of occasions ... Read More:

My 2nd Pure Siesta in 8 months has just died with the same problem as the last one, the tuner will no longer pick up a radio station in both FM and DAB mode. This isn't particularly useful if you use the radio as an alarm as the alarm comes on and you get no sound to wake you!
When it works it is OK sound wise but no more and the DAB tuner sensitivity is only average too (my Roberts DAB radio pulls in more). Also if you are a snooze button user it is very easy to hit another button instead of the snooze, as they all feel the same, which disables the snooze feature completely. All in all probably the worst consumer electronics purchase I've ever made. I'm now off to look at getting a Roberts clock radio.

I bought this as a compact occassional use cd / dab player for the bedroom, but have been so incredibly impressed with it that I have it in my sitting room! From the moment I took it out of the box, the quality just spoke volumes. Plug it in and it automatically knows the time abd the date! Brilliant search on the DAB, nothing you cant get (and I live in Devon). I have not heard any hum that others mention. The only drawback I would say is that the sound quality is very slightly tinny, but that is down to its tiny compact size. Very impressed with this, excellent quality at a very good price. I would definitely buy more Pure products.

Having done extensive research about DAB radio and wanting a portable one to take to football matches I went for this radio from Pure. All the bad reviews seem to focus on the poor reception. If you check out before you buy, the areas you live or work etc. you can then make a judgement whether it's worth buying. I did and all areas I use the radio in were listed as "should have reasonable reception" whilst this didn't fill me with confidence I can say that the reception is great in these areas. Sometime you lose signal a bit when travelling but this is when you are going in and out of signal areas. I have never yet had no signal at all.
I would recommend this radio especially for the battery life, a common DAB problem is that it drinks the batteries and therefore ... Read More:

I bought this system in June. It worked fine and gave good sound. I was pleased with it for the money paid. Then in September the tuner stopped working. I contacted amazon by email on Friday and a replacement had been delivered the next day. Let's face it, things go wrong with these systems whatever the make. At least you can be confident that amazon will replace defective items.

I don't get decent fm reception where I live, but with this little chap I'm perfectly happy listening to what I want.
The sound quality is great, it looks smart and I have superb reception without needing to have the aerial out (one of my bugbears as I always seem to knock them and lose reception).
Set up wasn't tricky, but you do have to press a couple of buttons and twiddle the middle bit when you want to change station. If like me though you pretty much have your favourite one that's on most of the time, this isn't a big issue.
I can't really see why it not having an off button is a major problem - surely if you have to press a button to turn it off, just flicking the switch at the power point isn't too much trouble? That seems like a very minor ... Read More:

I was looking to replace the mess of wires that was the hi-fi unit in our kitchen; this unit comprised a CD player, cassette player and radio. With some Heath Robinson DAB contraption using an extra plug point and further gadgetry to allow mp3 players to play!
I was desperate to find something compact, which ran off ONE plug and which would have an auxiliary access point for an mp3 player cable (we have three different mp3 players in our house - none of them iPod). Incorporated DAB radio was also high on my wish list - if the thing looked half-way decent I would also be happy. The cassette player was not an issue :)
Enter the PURE Chronos CD DAB:
Radio (DAB & FM);
CD player (which plays mp3 CDs but the random play algorithm is iffy);
Alarm Clock; ... Read More:

This radio is really good, I love it and agree with all of the other reviews, but... I would recommend also buying the add on speaker. Was slightly disappointed with the sound, but the additional speaker I think its amazing.

When I bought the radio I thought it looked a bit plasticy and some of the buttons a bit chunky but I have got used to it and its grown on me.
The sound quality is great but the wind up function is only of any practical use when using it in FM mode. So I never use the wind up.
The main feature is that you can fully charge the radio and then use it in DAB mode for up to 6 hours of use. This makes it an ideal bathroom radio or emergency entertainment when you have a power cut (which I experienced in January 2008).
The Freeplay radio is easy to operate which you would expect however, I purchased a different rechargeable radio for the second bathroom and even though it looks great its not obvious what the buttons actually mean on this other radio.
