The Archos 405 is a tempting concept - a media player that can handle music, photo and video files and a battery which outlasts most DVD portables. The separate docking station (DVR) offers the ability to record from satellite TV or AV equipment. Well, we were hooked as following the premature demise of the Goodman's portable DVD player were in the market for a more compact "video on the go" system.

Unfortunately the reality did not quite live up to expectation. For the price it's a neat piece of kit but technophobes are going to struggle with some aspects. I received this mp3 player as a gift at Christmas two years ago and since then it has been a reliable and useful piece of technology. It is very simple to use and I have experienced no problems with it freezing or breaking at all yet. I would strongly recommend this player to someone who wants high quality sound and ease of use.

Archos Protective Carry Case for use with the Gmini XS100

Belt loop is too small except for narrow belts. Loop is badly placed so case sticks up above belt and into your side. Open sided. No way of carrying earbuds too. Pretty much a waste of time.

Archos AV700TV 40GB Mobile Digital TV Recorder

Like another reviewer I purchased this item from Avides. Delivery was pretty quick, unfortunately not all the accessories were included. No USB lead, no USB host lead and no anttena cable/carrying case. Emailed Avides and they apologised and said they would send missing items. They did, but over some period of time. Actually they were friendly to deal with and an honest mistake I can accept.

Potentially an awsome piece of kit, however mine does not record directly from a TV or Sat box like it is supposed to do. Recording direct from DVD player is not a problem. Digital Freeview aspect is fine and I have had it working in trains and cars, on the move.

Plenty of scope for keeping your music, photos too.
