I walk the dog a lot and take my radio everywhere with me. For a portable device it feels heavy! Functionality of the controls is fine and easy to use, even when wearing gloves. Perceived quality is reasonable and it is quite rugged, having already survived numerous drops (due to catching the ridiculously long headphones lead needed - see comments below). The reception when compared to FM in my area is poor (unlike my previous Philips DAB that died!) I found that the only solution to the reception problems was to spend another £30 spent on a set of decent Sony headphones (to replace the poor standard offerings) and a 1-metre extension lead to improve the signal reception. Whilst it works, I keep catching the lead on everything because ... Read More:

I bought this last year and had to exchange it instantly because the volume control went nuts!! A month later the new one started the same thing unable to turn down from LOUD!!
Apart from that lovely sound and easy to use etc! I'm off to the shop to try again!!
I have owned the DX40's predecessor, the Elan, for a couple of years now and cannot fault it's performance, so when I decided to buy a second DAB radio, this was the obvious choice. It looks good (no retro wood or cheap looking plastic)and has a small footprint. The only slight problem with the older model was poor life of rechargeable batteries (I have now modified the radio so it automatically charges when plugged into the mains).
The new model is even better, with more features and a chargepak unit available (though at around £30 it's a bit steep...)
If you are looking for a reliable, sensibly priced quality DAB radio which can be run off the mains and batteries then buy this one!

If you want a radio with an option to use a rechargeable battery pack then you need to but the Pure Evoke 1S not the 1XT as listed below.
I have just purchased the 1S with the battery pack and and it is amazing. I would highly recommend that the ability to take it where you want is well worth the extra cost.

I've had one of these for a while now and bought it after a demo in good audio store. It is capable of handling all music with some ability and can really rock when turned up! The basic tone is nearly neutral and benefits from a little treble and bass lift. It suits voice and acoustic material well - Rock and Jazz do well with a little bass lift. DAB reception is good. I can get all the major stations loud and clear. There are loads of station presets available on the excellent remote control. It has an input for your MP3 / iPod and a headphone socket. I bought it specifically as a kitchen system and its very narrow front-to-back footprint (about 6") means it takes-up little room against the wall. And it can be used as an 'alarm-clock' set to ... As you can currently buy fairly decent DAB Radios for near the £30 region, it may be hard to justify spending this kind of money on a little speaker. I feel that it is well worth the money. Admittedly, Pure sell the Evoke/Sonus/Tempus 1XTs as kitchen/bedroom radios where sound quality does not matter as much, but it is, as most reviewers say, a warm, rich room-filling sound (and better, to my ears, than the more expensive 'luxury' Evoke 3 - not that the Evoke 3 sounds bad). My only complaint with it is that the bass is not as deep as the main unit's. That said, together, they produce a very well balanced tone, and while you may not be able to adjust the tone of the Evoke, I can't imagine that anyone would be disappointed with the sound in ...
