We bought this radio to replace our Evoke Pure 2 which has a very annoying fault on the volume knob (it needs to be warmed up for ages before you can run it below shouting level). On plugging the Philips in, it pulled in 16 local DAB stations but none of the mainstream BBC stations (1,2, 4, 5, 6 or 7) which our Pure seemed to get no problem. Anybody know why? A check on the DAB section of the BBC website shows these mainstream stations in a separate box - does that mean they're not actually DAB stations, and our Evoke was just getting the FM stations (you can't tell the source on the display panel)? More seriously, the Philips' FM reception is feeble, I can only just scrape onto Radio 2 and 4 by manual tuning with the aerial fully out and walking ... Read More:

This radio is really good, I love it and agree with all of the other reviews, but... I would recommend also buying the add on speaker. Was slightly disappointed with the sound, but the additional speaker I think its amazing.

When I bought the radio I thought it looked a bit plasticy and some of the buttons a bit chunky but I have got used to it and its grown on me.
The sound quality is great but the wind up function is only of any practical use when using it in FM mode. So I never use the wind up.
The main feature is that you can fully charge the radio and then use it in DAB mode for up to 6 hours of use. This makes it an ideal bathroom radio or emergency entertainment when you have a power cut (which I experienced in January 2008).
The Freeplay radio is easy to operate which you would expect however, I purchased a different rechargeable radio for the second bathroom and even though it looks great its not obvious what the buttons actually ... Read More:

Sadly I'm going to send this product back for three reasons.
1) Reception very poor - despite being in what the BBC website says is a good DAB reception area (walton-on-thames). It is also highly variable - sometimes it's fine when i'm stood in the room - but suddenly gets weak when I lie on the bed.
2) Display far too bright - even on the dim setting - I have to place a book in front of it at night - shouldn't really have to do this with a £50+ product.
3) - and this is the clincher - there's no way to easily cancel the alarm if you wake up before it goes off. I often have 5am starts for work - if I wake up before the alarm it's much better for my partner if I can quickly cancel it before it wakes her up as well - instead ... Read More:

PURE Chronos iDock, DAB Digital and FM clock radio with iPod Dock (black)
I gave had mine for a few months and gave up with it. The low whining noise means it's hard to hear spoken word programmes without turning the volume up loud - not good when you want to drift off to sleep. The alarm is incredibly complicated and set it takes ages - and I needed the manual. In the end, I gave up trying to change the settings to on/ off and accepted I would be woken every week day at 6.30 - even if I wasn't going to work. I then tried the CD version - thinking it might be the IPOD connection causing the noise - but that's even worse! The cd rattles and whirrs as it spins - so again you have to turn it up loud ..... And they still haven't simplified the settings. Very ... Read More:

This is a small DAB radio that seems to have all the functionality of larger models. It runs both from the mains via a transformer and on batteries. It has a small but clear display that can show the time, stations, and DAB programme related information simultaneously. Build quality is good and the radio is inexpensive.
On the downside, there are only three presets, the radio on FM does not have any RDS functionality, and it's uses batteries quickly whether on DAB or FM. More of concern for me is that the volume cannot be set particularly high - I wanted a DAB when gardening and washing the car. It doesn't quite have the volume for this. Second, it is not good in poor reception areas. I'm based in a relatively poor DAB area. My built-in car DAB radio works fine. ... Read More:

This radio looks and sounds great. But the clock, self-setting digitally, is NOT UP TO SCRATCH! Three minutes behind most of the time. A common or garden cuckoo clock can do better! I bought this item for radio alarm, so disappointing. Also, the sleep mode began to malfunction after a couple of weeks - diagnosed as "Hardware issue". Had to return radio to Pure for a replacement. Pure's Customer Service leaves a lot to be desired.
We got this mainly because we live in Tenerife and my wife wants to listen to The Archers without having to sit at the PC!
Got the radio today, followed the simple instructions to connect to our wireless Internet router, and that's it. The Archers came through loud and clear!! Incredibly simple to set up and works as advertised.
I then followed the instructions to be able to play files from Windows Media Player (v11) on my PC. Two minutes later I had Joan Armatrading being streamed wirelessly from my PC to the radio. Fantastic!
Obviously, I've only had it for a day and only used a couple of features, but for now it is a fantastic buy. Incredibly simple to setup and use.
The only small niggle I have is that the small screen is bright ... Read More:

I've had this for a few weeks now and I have to say my mornings are greatly improved now that I'm woken by the radio rather than a horrible ringing.
The set up was *really easy! I'm *not a gadget person and hate instructions, so getting this up and running was really impressively quick and simple. I love how once you set it you don't have to worry about setting it again - it doesn't ring on weekends when you have the weekday setting on. And I *really love how you awaken to the last station you were listening to - so you can change that up without touching the overall settings.
The other great feature is how the digital display dims down according to how dark it is - so no glaring glow while you sleep.
All in all - a brilliant little machine. The only slight downside is that the ... Read More:

I bought one of these for my mother who lives out in the sticks where FM signal is poor. I knew that DAB signal was good as I have a set in my car which works well. She wasn't disappointed! She uses it mainly for Radio 4 and the sound fills a quite substantial kitchen, the controls are very easy to use - the simplicity for her was the killer app!
So a couple of months later, the backlight failed on my kitchen DAB, (not a Pure) so the ideal replacement.
