Excellent little machine, though mine came in a white case. Still looks good though.
It's amazingly small and ridiculously easy to use. Plug into your PC/Mac and it appears as an external drive.
Mac users: this recorder uses WMA files. The Apple site states that iTunes will play them, but it doesn't. The fix is simple: go to Microsoft.com; type in Quicktime and download flip4mac; then go to a WMA file's Get Info on and change the file association. That's it!

This is the worst product I have ever used. I used it once and it has not worked since. Olympus will not do anything about it. The one time it did work, the sound quality was terrible, I could not understand a word of what i had said and I was holding the damn thing. Batteries last a whole 10 mins before being completely used up. The old mechanical ones with a little cassette work much better and are a lot cheaper.

I also thought long and hard about which recorder to buy. In the end I narrowed it to just one, the H4 and was so glad I did. My intention was for a device that recorded both outside ambient sounds, such as water (streams), the sea, rain, wildlife and generally any sound I could use with my meditation/relaxation CDs. Reading the book I did become somewhat confused, but when I realised that a lot of the specialised things the H4 can do I would never use, I was able to learn the basics and switch on and record. I was so pleased with the results and with the ease I could transfer from H4 to computer software, wondered why I didn't make to move to this sort of unit before. I suppose because I come from the old school and felt that in order to record quality, ... Read More:

I use this for recording my singing lesson. Quality of sound for this is excellent. Burns onto a CD wonderfully. It does occasionally cause problems with my IPOD but just doing a basic reset on the machine sorts it out without losing any data.

I saw the very negative review of this and felt I had to protest! It's great and does the job fine. However, the mic is the weak spot (just like any mic/headphones supplied with a product) so I'd suggest swapping it for a superior one. Once you've done that you'll hear a massive difference.

I'd been wanting a digital voice recorder to record my lectures, but my options were somewhat limited due to the fact that I use a Mac, and this one was unanimously recommended to me. It hasn't disappointed- the sound quality is generally very good (although the mic is ridiculously sensitive- it's much more effective on lo than hi), I love the fact that the USB plugs directly into the computer (no fiddling around with cords) and battery life seems fairly reasonable.
The only thing that's slightly annoying is the way that third party software is needed to convert the WMA files into MP3s to be played in iTunes, but such programs are easy and inexpensive to purchase, so it isn't a huge issue. A very effective, easy to use product- I'd highly recommend it. ... Read More:

I bought this to help me with interviews. It is surprisingly the same size as Sony Ericsson W810 mobile phone. It is very easy to use, I like the fact that you can adjust the playback speed to slow or fast. I read the manual before installing the software and find it completely easy to use. It may have been updated though. Downloading files was straight forward as well. It doesn't work like an external storage. You can playback the files after downloading using Itunes or even WMPlayer. But only after downloading using the 'Digital Wave Player'. Very pleased with this purchase.

Firstly, this is NOT Slim-line, but to be fair to Sony they don't describe it as such, that's in the Amazon heading. It's actually wider than my old Walkman because of the speaker.
I chose this over the plastic-cased models as I thought it would be more robust, & it's certainly 'nicer' than the plastic model I tried. However, a lot of background noise from the unit's motor comes out on the recordings, which is a bit surprising as the motor doesn't sound loud when you are actually recording.
It's OK, I've kept it, but it's disappointing - I expected much better from Sony & for the price.
Oh, & it takes AAA batteries, not AAs as described in some write-ups.
