I'm so glad I found these reviews. I was getting quite paranoid that, despite taking the greatest of care with it, I had somehow managed to break my MZ-N1, annoingly just outside the warranty date. But it seems to be a recurring theme. And I, too, was unable to buy an extended warranty on it - it really does suggest a problem that was known when the product was released.
To me, the whole point of an MD player is to have a piece of digital equipment that doesnt skip. Unfortunately, the laser and seemingly everything else inside my player has packed in. Having been a superb purchase for around 12 months and 3 weeks, my MZ-N1 stopped recognising discs, started telling me there was a 'read error' and stopped recording accurately. It then ... This player would have scored 5 stars if I didn't need to keep swapping disks all the time. Even with maximum compression, 7-8 hours is the maximum you can record on to one disk. That might sound a lot, but we have come to expect more given the hundreds of hours of playback from Apple's IPOD and similar hard disk based players.
Removing storage capacity from the equation and you have a very good machine. Small, neat and quite easy to use, although the in-line volume control is fiddly and I am forever double-checking to make sure I have turned the thing off to ensure that the battery doesn't run down. As for battery life - I reckon on 4-5 hours before a recharge and double that if you plug the optional single cell battery into the ... Read More:
I've had this particular player for about a week now and tried to get a decent opinion on it before writing a review.
Battery life is hard to evaluate. 56 hours? maybe. i've been using the rechargable battery which came with the player and i'd give it around 20 hours. The charging bay is a really nice touch. nothing horribly complex but extremely useful and has a very sleek design.
The MZ-N707 feels pretty robust, but haven't and hopefully won't test it to much. it doesn't skip at all, which is one of the great wonders of minidisc. its so much smaller than a discman. it's the ideal portable solution. besides, with sony claiming a minidisc takes up to 320 minutes of music, it is the ultimate portable medium. cheap and plentiful ... Ok when I bought this minidisc player it was the smallest and lightest one available, I don't know whether it still is or not but it is very convenient and light. It has pretty much everything you could want feature-wise except for long-play and all those new-fangled mp3-internet type things and the sound quality is great, as is the recording quality... until, that is, you drop it and the recording function stops working.
That's the problem you see. I dropped mine a few times, not from a great height or onto a hard floor. I suppose I just dropped it one too many times and as a result the recording function no longer works. I discovered this when I tried to record another track on the end of a minidisc full of my own music and it erased ... Read More:

I wanted a portable audio device that sounded better than the mp3s I had tried. The Sharp is well built (although I have not dropped it yet) and simple to use. I thought that atrac 3 would sound significantly inferior to cd but using quality Sennheiser headphones I could make out only minor differences. An AA battery lasts forever and the controls are simple. The disadvantages are that the screen is not backlit, there is no remote and recording is done in real time. None of this bothers me much. If you want quantity and small size go for mp3. If you prefer quality try minidisc.

Little to say which would sum up this recorder/player. A man who has had nearly every Sharp recorder, this has to be my best. Looks great, sounds terrific and has been trouble free and pocket friendly. Love it!!
