After years of suffering jumpy, easily scratched CDs, I had to think of either an MP3 or a MD player.. For some reason I couldn't cope with the unreal, untouchable MP3 player and I am now the happy owner of a Sony MZ-N505. It is a versatile player allowing you to shuffle recordings, combine tracks into groups and true to it's interactive Net claim, it specialises in working through your PC to deliver faultless sound quality, important if you are a musician.. The supplied earphones resist every attempt of a manic drummer to dislodge and the USB cable is, for once, long enough to keep in place at your PC without having to slide it out of the workstation every time.. All in all, a professional piece of kit..

If you want a hard drive with 1000s of songs, this isn't for you. It can hold 80 minutes of music, or on low quality 320 minutes of music, which is far below that of hard drive players. The MZN 910 is the top of the line portable MD recorder and I've loved using it. The battery life is absolutely supreme (I've easily got a months worth of listening from the rechargable batter at approx 2 hours a day), the remote control a complete joy to use and the design also very chic.

I have owned this machone for 14 months and has been the perfect recording facility. It has a PC, DAB, CD and DVD player connected to it for all recording. It has extreme long play, fitting about 90 tunes onto 1 mini disc. Absolutely amazing. You can connect your PC keyboard and label the tracks, rather than just tapping through the remote control, which is packed with all the features you need from Mini Disc.
Solid aluminium Sony QS construction, for the upper class system and with always from Sony, wonderfully rich sound. You can also control the sound, with filters, which are available at the touch of a button on the front of the unit, with background LED lights.

I've had this particular player for about a week now and tried to get a decent opinion on it before writing a review.

Battery life is hard to evaluate. 56 hours? maybe. i've been using the rechargable battery which came with the player and i'd give it around 20 hours. The charging bay is a really nice touch. nothing horribly complex but extremely useful and has a very sleek design.

The MZ-N707 feels pretty robust, but haven't and hopefully won't test it to much. it doesn't skip at all, which is one of the great wonders of minidisc. its so much smaller than a discman. it's the ideal portable solution. besides, with sony claiming a minidisc takes up to 320 minutes of music, it is the ultimate portable medium. cheap and plentiful storage ... This is a great minidisc recorder. I got it to record interviews and lectures, and have been really impressed with the sound quality. It's easy to use, and light to carry around. I've got an external microphone as well, but don't really need it, as the internal one is excellent.

I have just ordered my second of these little beauties (I want a backup). I have ownded a few MD players & recorders & this one performs very nicely when compared to the other, even though it's not the most up-to-date. It's slim, battery lasts for ages & (as always with MD) the sound quality is excellent (the main reason to avoid MP3 players).

The fact that it's not recordable is not a legitimate gripe as it clearly states that this is a player, not a recorder. Do you expect your portable CD player to record CDs?
