I bought this player a few months back, before heading off on a four-month trip. The player worked perfectly, stood up to some fairly rough treatment and showed it's versatile side on many occasions, playing copied DVDs, VCDs, photo CDs and music on many an occasion. The screen is good, with a fairly wide viewing angle, and the blacks show through particularly well for a portable player. The sound is excellent with a pair of headphones (or earphones), and when hooked up to a TV with the enclosed cables, the picture is as good as any home DVD player. Although it's expensive, if you're looking for a very good portable DVD player, I would happily recommend this model.

In reference to the earlier review, Philips have confirmed to me that the PET825 and PET821 models are not equivalent. They stated that the battery life for the 825 is 6 hrs, but only 2 1/2 hrs for the 821. They were unable to say why the 825 is generally unavailable in the UK.....

The AKAI audio video centre clearly benefits from an excellent build quality and well thought out sleek design. Both TV & DVD picture quality displayed on the 10.4 inch screen are among the best, as is the generous 10 watt (total) onboard sound system shared by the FM/AM digital radio. Despite an abundance of on-screen controls to fully customise picture and sound quality to any preference or surroundings, the initial set up, instruction manual and further configurations via the remote control are thankfully simple and straight forward to use. Overall, this unit ticks all the right boxes, but for the absence of a built in TV antenna relying entirely on a separate indoor or roof top Ariel to demonstrate it's excellent all round capabilities.
