Although it had reasonable sound to begin with, the left earphone gradually cut out as the wire had somehow broken on the adapter part of the headphones. Incredibly flimsy and eventually all sound cut off.
Needs better build.

The main requirement of a radio is that it produces excellent sound quality and that is exactly what this Sony radio does. The bass is perfect (my partner's a professional bassist, so I'm fussy!)and I rarely have to use the mega bass facility. I mainly listen to classical which has the widest range of sound covering the whole orchestra & jazz which requires a full bass sound without overpowering the top and middle, so it's a good test and the balance is perfect. Speech is very clear and easy to listen to. The tuning wheel is precise and isn't too loose, so it doesn't retune if accidentally brushed.The tuning dial lights up so it's very clear. I was a bit sceptical about whether the sound quality would be any good but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought they would sound horrible and tinny, but you can hear a decent amount of low and mid range frequencies when you use them with a 3G Nano. If you're after a compact & easy to use set of travel speakers, you can't go wrong. Also, when the speakers arrived the power pack hadn't been included. I contacted the seller by email and they sent out a power pack which arrived the following morning. Full marks for their communication.

As an alarm clock it's basic. Buying something this cheap seems to mean that the radio is fiddly to tune and sound quality is 1970s telephone. Yes, it's cheap, but Sony's much vaunted build quality is definitely slipping. The first one we got had a very definite mains hum from the power supply. The second one was better but still audible and annoying. The third one was ok - but I was annoyed at having to exchange two before getting one that was satisfactory.

The display isn't the brightest and the controls are scattered all round the place with little logic. Some of the switches are rather hit and miss.

It's cheap but you take pot luck with the build quality.

I was looking to replace the mess of wires that was the hi-fi unit in our kitchen; this unit comprised a CD player, cassette player and radio. With some Heath Robinson DAB contraption using an extra plug point and further gadgetry to allow mp3 players to play!

I was desperate to find something compact, which ran off ONE plug and which would have an auxiliary access point for an mp3 player cable (we have three different mp3 players in our house - none of them iPod). Incorporated DAB radio was also high on my wish list - if the thing looked half-way decent I would also be happy. The cassette player was not an issue :)

For the money, I guess this isn't a bad little machine, but I'd agree with all the other people who've said that it's a bit too quiet. In an otherwise quiet environment it's fine, but out in the real world, even at full volume, it really doesn't cut the mustard. I find it loud enough for rock music, but pretty useless for talking books, on the street or on the train, and especially on planes. You can't hear a damn thing! I'm not a big classical listener, but I also find that orchestral stuff isn't as loud as it might be. Listening to a Star Wars soundtrack the other morning as I walked to work, I could barely hear it even at full volume, and the road I was walking alongside wasn't THAT busy. Straightforward piece of equipment. Simple to use and which does the job effectively. It would be nice if the sound quality was better but it is no worse than other transmitters I have used. Bearing in mind the price it is an excellent piece of equipment.

1) Not very sensitive. I live near High Wycombe, not I think an area of high signal strength, but hardly out in the sticks. The unit sometimes struggles to auto-tune, and reception is somewhat hissy. It is necessary to position the radio relative to the phones (i.e. to your head) carefully to get reasonable reception. I judge it adequate for listening to speech while sitting down, marginal for music, and not acceptable for use with the radio in the pocket while moving about.
On the other hand, the phone cable can never be the ideal aerial and I am not sure that any FM "personal radio" can perform wonderfully except very close to a transmitter. I had a similar, much more expensive (Sharp) personal radio that did better, but far from perfectly.

The functions on this unit are great. It has two alarm settings (one for during the week and one for weekends) which is great. The sound quality for the CD player is fine. The setting up was easy thanks to the decent instructions. BUT - I can't use it. There is a low hum emitted at all times by the unit (nothing to do with the CD Player) and because I want it on the bedside table (near my head) it keeps me awake. I have been onto Sony but they are not helpful, advising me to take it to a Service Centre - I suppose it is unlucky that there are none near me. So not a great product unless you are a heavy sleeper.
